Windows 2000 Network Issue

Hi all,

I have installed Windows 2000 advanced server and promoted it as a root
domain.

When the clients on Windows 2000 Pro. try to join the domain, it resolves
the domain name
but gives an error saying "Network Path not found".

However, once a client crashed, i re-installed windows 2000 Pro. (fresh
installation)
on drive D, without actually formatting drive C. during the setup, on
joining the domain,
it joined without any problems - was surprised.

Decided to format a C drive and again install win2kpro. Now, it gives the
same error
"Network path not found" on joining the domain" - Strange.

Not too sure wht the problem might be.

Can any one help me?

SYMPTOMS: When trying to join a W2K/XP to a Windows 2000 domain by using he
NetBIOS domain name, you are successful but not the FQDN and you may receive
one of the following error messages:1) The following error occurred
attempting to join domain "example.com": The network location cannot be
reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help.
2) Network path not found.
RESOLUTION: This issue may occur if the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service is not
running on the client computer. To start the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service,
go to MMS>Services, double-click TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service

Hi Robert,

Thnkx for the help. I did check the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service on
the client.
It was running allright. I will check out the link u gave me.

try to assign ip, dns, dg manually, and hen join the domain again. if it
doesn't work, logon locally and ping the dns server. does the computer get
reply?

I first tried manually (gave the IP and the Gateway not DNS since no
intrernet was required) it
did not join. Then tried get ip automatically. Still the same problem.

but one thing surprises me. i just checked get ip automatically on another
win2kpro,
and restarted. It just joined the domain. but not other systems. i have
checked the settings
and the account details, but still i get the same erro for other clients.

One theing i just forgot to mention, the server has 2 network adapters, on
with the static IP connected to
a cable modem and one with a dynamic, connected to the hub.

two NICs, this is the problem. You should have some errors in event viewer.
For the test, disable one nic, then it should work.

Well, my manager told to demote from DC for time being, and create a
workgroup.
We do not have any problems with workgroup.

I need to do some RnD sometimes. But not for now.
