I have a VSS database that asks for the password when I
login as administrator (though I remember leaving the
password empty when creating).
Is there any way I can reset the administrator password
so that I can add new users to it

Cheers
Krishna

If you have forgotten the Admin password,
you are probably out of luck for YOUR
specific database.

That's the bad news.

Every time you create a VSS data base,
you get a new Admin account without
a password.

You may have to deinstall/reinstall VSS
if you have only a single VSS database.

Or, you may be able to cheat
by copying a VSS database from elsewhere.

..... the VSS Admin Login dialog has three fields:
Username: with Admin greyed out
Password:
Database:
Note that Database has a [Browse...] button.

If you click the [Browse...] button
you get the Open SourceSafe Database
dialog ... if you are lucky you may be
able to find an Available database
that you can work with because it
has no Admin password.

Note that the Open SourceSafe Database
dialog also has a [Browse...] button
of its own. You may be able to find
other VSS databases to try to open.

Once you get logged on as Admin,
then you can create more VSS
databases through Tools, Create Database.

Note that an anomaly of VSS passwords
is that they do not seem to be case sensitive.

It is a good idea to password
protect your Admin and other
VSS user accounts ... it's also
a good idea to remember passwords ...
you are not alone (unfortunately)
when it comes to forgetting passwords.

good luck

gerry

BTW ... you may have, as you say,
left your Admin password empty
when you created you VSS database ...
that's a serious problem because
anyone can mess with your Admin
password. g.

I stand (sit) corrected ...
Kyle Alons in a simultaneous post (q.v.)
gives you a hack that I assumes works ...
so much, once again, for Microsoft's security. g.

If you just want to add new users, create an NT account called Admin and run
SourceSafe Admin as that user - no password prompt will appear! You may
have to add "Use_Network_Name = Yes" to the srcsafe.ini file for this to
work.

The only thing you can't do is change the password, because you need to know
the old password to do that.

Fantastic security! :-D
