Is it possible to start with an existing .CHM file and integrate that with
Visual Studio help? If so, what does the process look like, and what tools
are used?

Thanks,
Greg Dunn

Hello Greg,

you can call HTMLHelp 1.x (CHM) from a application developed by Visual
Studio IDE.
(see my site: http://www.help-info.de/en/welcome.htm)

But assuming you want to integrate help in Visual Studio's IDE:

Help2 (HxS) is the help for Visual Studio. The Help 2.0 SDK (also known as
Help 2.0 Workshop), is required to compile your help source to Visual Studio
compatible help (.HxS) files. Its important to note that MS Help 2 is
designed primarily for Visual Studio help integrators. It is not for
creating general application help. Rob Chandler's FAR is recommended as one
main tool (see. http://www.helpware.net/FAR)

Back to your question.
Have a look at: Frank's tutorial "MSHelp2 Conversion and Integration Using
Helpware FAR and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005". This tutorial provides
Step-by-Step instructions on how to migrate a HTMLHelp 1.x project to a
Visual Studio Help 2.x project and integrate it into the Visual Studio IDE
Help Contents windows using only Helpware FAR HTML and Microsoft Visual
Studio 2005.
