After many failed attempts at installation, VS.net finally installed with no
errors. But, when I choose "view code" for an aspx, asax, etc. I get the
error "There is no editor available for <filename.aspx, filename.asax, etc)
Make sure the application for this file type is installed" All .net file
types appear to be associated with VS.net. Any help greatly appreciated.
I'm running IE 6, W2K Advanced Server, SP2 with all the current security
roll up packages and COM+ packages.

Thanks

Hello Rich

Thank You for using Microsoft Newsgroups
My name is Kurtis

You have a peculiar problem here. I have only seen this behavior in one
other case that has been reported to us.
In that particular case the customer reformatted the machine and the
problem was resolved. The customer did this on their own and it was not by
our recommendation. They did not want to spend the time and resources
troubleshooting the problem. If you have the luxury or doing this, it may
be your best bet, if not, read on.

That is not necessarily my recommendation, however, this is going to take
some troubleshooting to figure out.
In the known case, un-install and re-install did not help.

Here are my directions for starting to troubleshoot this. You may try to do
this with me in this newsgroup posting, however, if you want to get to a
quicker resolution I suggest that you contact us at 800-936-5800 and open a
support incident. This way we can work together on the phone and
troubleshoot this problem.

Here is where I would start:

The first thing we will try is to uninstall. Remove the .Net Framework and
Visual Studio .Net from Add/Remove programs. After uninstalling, remove the
following Registry Keys:

1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.0

2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.0
3. HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\.NetFramework
4. HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Net Framework Setup

Next delete the following directories:

1. The installation directory for VS.NET.

2. .\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio

3. .\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application
Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio
4. c:\program files\microsoft visual studio .Net
5. C:\windows or winnt\Microsoft.Net

Search for and delete all instances of mscoree.dll

Reinstall. At this point, I don't see how anything from the previous
installation is left. If this still does not work, then there are two
other tests that will provide information for me to evaluate the cause of
the failure.

TESTS IN CASE REINSTALLING FAILS:

=================================

TEST1 : Registry Log

-----------------------------------

If we log all registry activity, we might find that it is having problems
accessing certain information in the registry.

1. Go to http://www.sysinternals.com.

2. Download the tool REGMON for XP.

3. Launch Regmon.

4. Click the magnifying glass to stop logging.

5. Click the filter button (funnel) to create a filter. Type in devenv.exe
as
the process to include.

6. Click the eraser to clear the page.

7. Click the magnifying glass to start logging again.

8. Reproduce the problem as quickly as possible, and then immediately click
the
magnifying glass again to stop logging.

9. Save the log, zip it, and send it to me.

Test 2: File Log

------------------------

Finally, it may help to see if there are any file access problems.

1. Go back to http://www.sysinternals.com.

2. Download the FILEMON tool for XP.

3. Follow the same steps that you did for the registry log.

4. Save, zip, and send me the log.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank You

Thanks a bunch Kurtis, followed your directions and everything seems to be
running smoothly now. I did however have trouble reinstalling the
framework, I un-installed some other programs (virus protection, etc.) and
that also helped.

Thanks again
Rich
