Can't Add Shapes (or do anything!)

I've installed the 60-day trial of Visio and can't get anything to work.
When I try to drag-and-drop shapes into the grid/page, my mouse changes to
the crossed arrows icon, and I can't drag & drop anything onto the page.
Most of my options in the menus are also greyed out (including options under
New, Save, etc.)
