I have just downloaded XP SP3. Anyone had any issues with VB6 after
installing it?
One hardly dares to install any updates from MS nowadays, without some prior
feedback :(

It's not stable yet, especially for AMD based PC's.

Quote: "Hewlett-Packard has told customers not to install Windows XP service
pack three (SP3) on AMD-based desktops until Microsoft and HP cough fixes to
the endless reboot snafu that has wreaked havoc on PCs.
Microsoft confirmed yesterday that it was scurrying to patch the problem
after hundreds of angry XP customers first grumbled about the sizeable
cock-up last week."
I've installed it on several Pentium CPU computers and have
encountered no problems with any programs including VB6
Nice to hear that. I once had an automatic update function in my
softwares and then dismissed it because - no matter how stable I thought
it was - somebody always found new errors.
I always wondered how Microsoft does it. I mean when you release an
update it should make everything better, not worse.
I only give updates to people if they ask me for it. I was thinking
about putting the update function into it again, but after reading this
I'm scared too much, and I think I'll stay with my methode.
If you like, put me down, I'm always interested to hear critics.
Another mystery thing is, the us .iso is 544 MB, while the swedish .iso is
368 MB ??
One can wonder what is missing in the swe version.

Are you truly 'wondering' or just 'bragging'?
'Missing' implies 'not patched', and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

The general concensus seems to be that SP3 is OK but ... there are some
gotchas, and MS points those out on the site. e.g. if you have XP Gold,
and if this then do that type stuff. If you've read that, and your
system is "standard", whatever that means, then it seems you will
problaby be in pretty good shape.
You have to keep in mind when you read about problems, that it's really
only the problems you're going to hear about; those with no problems
have no reason to post to the various groups. So IMO the thing to do is
look for repeats, or commonalities in the gripes to assess whether they
are widespread and might impact you or not.
For instance, I've noticed several time people complain that the XP
Auto-Update feature stops working. And it does seem to do a couple of
things to IE7, but that's probably because it's like reinstalling it;
don't know. The rest isn't worth repeating. Yet. IMO. <g>
Personally, since SP3 basically contains SP2 with all of its hotfixes
and nothing more of any consequence, I'm going to wait for one or two
hotfixes to come out before I install it. In other words, SP3 = SP2 +
hotfixes, which is exactly what's on my computer right now, meaning
there's no rush. Since I can fix 99% of the problems with restoring a
disk image, I decided to wait to install SP3.
That said, I DID download it though, just so it'd be in my archives
when I need it. Should I have to do a manual rebuld tomorros, I'd still
use SP2. But for now ... nah, I'll wait to see what comes out for
hotfixes. IMO SP3 is just tying up loose ends from an MS point of view
so is more likely to have problems than SP2 did, which was critical to
most people.

Besides language differences, you might not be comparing apples &
apples. e.g. the full SP3 is large; but the part of SP3 aimed
specifically at my machine is only 67 Meg. If I get it by auto update,
it'll be 67 Meg. If I download it, which I did, the full complement is
a very large file; 324 Meg. I think the "544" number is off somehow
since 324 Meg is the whole English language SP. Unless again you're
comparing different languages/geographics.

My concerns was mostly out of the fact that HP is claiming "don't install
SP3 on AMD computers"!?
Something about some special intel code misstakingly installed, could be HP
specific, but one never knows. It's likely ok for these homebrew AMD
machines.
I've downloaded it too, but think I'll wait with the install.... I surely am
going to spend those 18 hours doing a total backup to tape beforehand.
The sizes is from MS download page, the size changes if you chose another
language.

Issue isn't with the CPU, it is with how some OEM's setup their WinXP image
that ended up
effecting some people with AMD processors.
