VMWare and Permission Denied Error

I have a VB6 application which is a physical two tier deployment
(logical 3 tier). The client application creates an instance of an
ActiveX.exe on the data server.

ActiveX.exe on the data server.
The activeX is configured (DCOMCNFG) to run under a local user ID and is
granted access to a SQL database using NT authentication.
Everything works fine.
We then replaced the server using a virtual server with VMWare, and now
we get a permission denied error when we try to run the app.
The server is running on VMWare ESX 2.5.2
Has anyone exerperience a similar issue?
