I just installed the above DVD, told it to install Windows 2008 locally.
After installation completed, I find I can access the content on the
DVD, but NOT Windows 2008. It doesn't prompt me to insert the DVD, it
gives an error saying expected files were not found...
Files are at this location and appear to be present
C:\Program Files\Microsoft TechNet\2009JUN\1033
e.g. ws08.hxs is there
How can I fix it?

As in "Windows Server 2008". The topics in the Technet library are not
working.
Where? I did a search for "Windows Server 2008" and got no hits.
Nothing in the Index either. The experience reminded me why I stopped
doing that download. E.g. it looked as if nothing had changed in about
two years. Otherwise I would prefer to use the TechNet offline
viewer to going to the TechNet web site.

Yes. I see them there too:
<cmd_output command="dir w*8*" >

BTW ICIM that was done on Vista SP2 and it was an install
into a bare OS so there should be no question about which
version of dexplore.exe was being used. (E.g. no Visual Studio
version overriding the default one.)

Thank you. Those clues may help. I'm not on my Vista partition right now
but I will try to reproduce what you have described so far.
However, as I indicated, I think that the offline Library content looked to me
like it hadn't been changed in about 2 years and bears no similarity to what
is now available online. IMO it once was the case that the offline content
was a mirror of the online content with the added advantage that it was
far more searchable.
Hmm... this isn't even what I get shown when I just try to navigate
in my online TechNet Library. It was only shown after a search...
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb625087.aspx
(search for
"windows server 2008" inurl:library
)
For some bizarre reason, known only to Microsoft search,
that page only rates a hit on the third page of its hit results.
In contrast a Google web search puts it in the middle of its first page of hits
YMMV.

A Google search for '.hxs viewer' returned a bunch of things including:
#
Free HXS Compiled Help File Viewer
May 5, 2008 ... HXS are compiled help files made by Microsoft and are
mostly found within Microsfot's Visual Studio and MSDN installation and
help files.
www.davidtan.org/free-hxs-compiled-help-file-viewer/ - Cached - Similar
#
I would assume you have the viewer installed if you were able to look at
previous help files.
Could something have taken over the file association for it??

FWIW that's the tack I'm looking at now. With just TechNet installed
there is only an assocation for .hxs with filetype HXSFILE but no filetype
when ftype is given that name. Also, no hits at all for ftype | find /i "help"
So, I installed VS C++ EE thinking that that would at least install dexplore.exe version 8.
No such luck but it did change the association to yet another non-existent filetype.
I also tried a repair of TechNet after this. Still no change. I also note that
when I cancel the error message that the viewer display shows that IE was
somehow involved. Since this in was base Vista SP2 that would mean IE7.
I also note that Vista seems to totally ignore anything that I try to give it
in terms of overrides either via assoc, ftype, or even command line switches
for dexplore.exe via the Run... dialog. Very strange. A ProcMon trace
of all this is so far inpenetrable. ; )
Has anybody tried asking their online concierge about this problem yet? <EG>

When you install the Technet library, you will know straight away if it
has "changed" because the home page will change. You will also see the
month and year in the start menu AND the title bar of the application.
My home page for June 2009 is Exchange 2010.
In order to view topics such as Windows Server 2008 off-line you have to
select them at install time, but even if you don't select them, you
should still see them in the table of contents under "Products and
Technologies".
I've just noticed "Windows Server 2003" is also not working in the June
2009 library. I also notice "search" doesn't work for these products -
as you stated.
Do you see SQL Server 2008 (books online) in your TOC?
I can view Vista and Exchange 2007, but not Windows Server 2008 (or 2003).
Of course, those are superficial though IMO. It's the index and the
search that don't seem to get any attention.

Ah. Ok. That could explain the search and index problems I suppose.

<lol/> I should set this thing up on XP too but I don't have the room
for it. I'll check later.
However, I have good news/bad news. Good news: I know what's wrong.
Bad news: the ws08.hxs file is corrupt--void. E.g. I ran SysInternals
strings.exe against it and found "no strings". In fact, it appears to be
completely null. ; }
Hmm... I suppose I could do the same kind of checks without actually
using dexplore.exe...
2008-11-07 21:59 12,582,912 sql.Hxs
Same thing. Strings can't find anything in it.
Again, if that is due to me not explicitly requesting that category
then that might explain why it would be void but that is a pretty
bizarre way of notifying me that I need to do that IMO.
AFAIK I requested a full product install at the beginning...

I think we have enough facts now to get an online concierge involved. ; )
Good luck

I made a chat with the Technet Support and see their answer:
"...
Our support engineers will test this media as soon as possible after I
escalate this issue. You will probably receive a Initial Response Email from
our support engineers.
..."
I´ll wait for a repsonse by mail.
That's great news, please let us know if they update you with new info.
