Very slow to open Excel files through Explorer. This occurs on only one pc on
our network.
PC: Windows XP sp2
Network xp peer to peer
APP: Office XP with Excel 2002

If I open a network xls file through the Excel Open dialog box it opens up
right away. If I open up it by viewing it in windows explorer and
double-clicking on it it takes over 30seconds to load. It actuall takes about
20 seconds to even open the excel program, then another ten to load the file.
If excel is already open it takes the full 30 seconds.

It doesn't matter if excel is already open or not. It happens on all excel
files (it also happens in MS Word and I'm assuming all office apps but
haven't tried others). This does not happen in other apps, including very
large pdf files.
I just installed the SP3 for office and have tried fixes for slow network
files I've found in the MS support site. I tried changing the "OPEN" settings
in the Explorer file associations (change the open command, check and uncheck
options) too, but that didn't help.
I've spent too much time on this already and will probably have to just make
the user change her habits but I was hoping someone may have seen this before.

No, I never did figure it out. The user had to start opening files through
the application. If you find an answer, please post it. I will let you know
if I stumble on an answer.

Hi Guys.

I am also having this problem, cleared out all temp folders, and cleared
prefetch, deleted xlb toolbar files, fully updated Office, ran detect /
repair, altered registry settings, everything myself and multiple help
websites can think of!

My problem is affecting multiple users now, with both local files and
network files.

One thing i have noticed is that if the network connection is disabled the
files open straight away!?

Any ideas?

Thanks - Stuart

I have this same problem with Word 2003, Excel 2003 (but not PowerPoint) and
Compaq Visual Fortran running under XP SP2. All I know at this point is that
if I reboot in safe-mode, the problem goes away. I have tried all the
solutions listed in the various replies here, but none have worked for me. I
also created a new user account on this machine, and I get the same problem.
Any more ideas would be most appreciated.

Best Wishes,
Jim

I had the same problem, but think I found a fix. I disabled and then
re-enabled my Local Area Connection via the Network Connections control panel
and it seems to have fixed the problem, atleast for now. This is weird since
I have already rebooted several times, as well as tried all of the other
recommended remedies with no effect.

This also fixed the same problem I was having with Word files too.

Hope this works for others.

This also worked for me on the 1 pc that keeps getting the prob. Only thing
is updates seem to reset it, so until MS release a fix, we are destined to go
to individual pc's and do it manually. Try:
This worked for me:

Go to the Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types. Highlight XLS
extension and then click Advanced. Click Open from the list, and then click
Edit. Add "%1" (quotes are needed) to the end of the Application used
string (which will be /e for the Excel XLS extension.) Also uncheck the DDE
box. This strategy resolved my problems for Excel and for Word. I did not
come up with this solution myself...I found it on the Excel 2007 forum and I
have included a copy of that post below. Thanks Starksnet!

THANK YOU JOHN!
This has been a thorn in my side for months. The "%1" at the end of the
'open' string fixed both excel and word problems.

Hi I had this issue but it was in relation to a user who had a local printer attached..as soon as I disconnected this local printer - Office apps speeded up. Could this be your issue? To get around this, Control Panel, Folders, View and untick Automatically search for Network printers and folders

Hi Neil,

The following worked for my particular issue:

Empty out ALL temp folders, including:

1) C:\Windows\TEMP
2) %Temp% (Go to Start -> Run -> type "%TEMP%" and delete all files in
window that opens up.
3) Internet Explorer Temp Files (Use Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet
Options)
4) Prefetch Folder (Go to Start -> Run -> type "Prefetch" and delete all
files in window that opens up.
5) And last but not least, my particular excel files were on a network and
the computer was on a network HUB with another PC. I had to swap out the HUB
with a network SWITCH and that eliminated any remaining lag.

*note: some temp files may be in use while you're trying to delete them.
Just skip those files and continue deleting everything else you can.

Regards,

This help for me...

When you double click on a excel file in explorer it's just waiting and when
you push the office button at the left top corner it opens, correct?

If this is your problem then you have to add the following to the file types
properties "%1" (also the quotes are necessary)

So open explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types

got to the .XL?? extension click Advanced select the bold action -> Edit and
in the box under "Application used..." go to the end and add the "%1" after
the /e

so for the .XLSX Extensions Open command this becomes "<Installation
Folder>\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"

When it's the new action it should be "<Installation Folder>\EXCEL.EXE /e
"%1" /n

Did that for all the default actions of all Excel file types and now it
doesn't give me any problems anymore, didn't tried it yet for the other
applications cause they don't give me problems...

Greetz and good luck.

Hope this helps...
