SQL Server 2008 remote connection fails

I have an application (VB6) that connects to SQL server 2008 Express using
ADO....

The application works great when it runs on the (XP/SP3) machine as the SQL
2008 Express host. The XP machine is named serverx. Remote connection over
TCIP is enabled on the instance of SQL 2008 express ( in mix server/NT
authentication mode)
But when I install the application on other machines (1 XP and another
Vista) and try to connect to serverx with above connection string "sPath as
above)... I get error. Login Failed for user SAVERX\Guest. Both machines are
on the same LAN.

When I go to ODBC on the remote machine and manually create DSN entry
indicating "Connect to server to obtain default settings etc" and then
specify sa; as admin and the password (passx) the ODBC datasource test
indicates "Success." If I modify the ODBC setting and change to "with
windows NT authentication using the network login ID" test fails and give
error
Connection Failed
SQL State: 28000
SQL Server Error:18456
Microsoft[ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login Failed for user
SAVERX\Guest

I have enabled guest account on serverx still can't connect.

How do I resolve this problem? Do I need to install any thing on a client pc
that needs to connect (DSN less) remotely to SQL server 2008 express?

Even if both machines are on the same LAN, Windows authentication under
SQL-Server will usually work only if both machines are part of the same
domain or are part of different domains but the client's domain is a trusted
domain with the server's domain. When you're not using domain, beeing part
of the same workgroup instead is not sufficient.

It's still possible to authenticate with Windows authentification using the
named pipe protocol ; however, it's more complicated and prone to error.

Thanks for responding... interesting info. I am looking into the info.
Meanwhile; I tweaked my application and now have the error

Error 3706 Provider can not be found; It may not be properly installed

Anyone know which files needs to be installed on client machine for the
machine to connect to remote SQL 2008 Express?

Most likely it's an error in your connection string. However, without
seeing it, it's hard to say where the error is.

Obviously, I should have added in my previous statement that I don't think
you have an installation problem because you can connect using the sa
account and password.

This connection string using Native Client connects ok on the XP machine
where SQL Express 2008 is...

but neither would work on a remote computer... I get the error

specified... etc

Ah, if you can't connect from the remote machine using the sa account &
password, then that's another story. The SQL-Server Native Provider version
10 come with SQL-Server 2008 (Express or Not) and can also be downloaded
separately from:

From the link you gave... I browsed and downloaded X86 Package
(sqlncli.msi) - 4549 KB... installed and [my app] connected immediately.
First of... thank you very much for your help. I wonder why these things are
not documented... that a client needed some runtime client-side patch for
SQL 2008 Express to work properly.

SQL-2008 Express need this client-side patch to work properly only if you
are using a the latest Native Client Provider but it would have work OK if
you would have try the old and faithful ODBC provider for SQL-Server.
