Is the answer of the question true about other MS products that have R2 in
their name?

I have not tried, but I would assume that the answer is no. If nothing
else, the engine part of SQL 2008 R2 corresponds to CU4 for SQL 2008 SP1,
so SP1 is behind R2.

Again, I don't know and it outside my field of expertise. But as R2
releases are really point releases, 10.5 in this case, it's seems difficult
that a service pack to an earlier version would apply to a later version.
