Is AWE useful with SS 64-bit on
a 64-bit platform ?

No. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190673.aspx
which states "AWE is not required and cannot be configured on 64-bit
operating systems.".

As Tom says, no.

Note however, that to use AWE on 32-bit systems, the service account for SQL
Server needs to have the permissions "Lock pages in memory". And this
permission is very useful on 64-bit as well, since it prevents from SQL
Server from being swapped out if a bad driver starts to steal memory in
the machine. To take benefit of this protection in Standard Edition, you
need one of the more recent CU:s.
