Hi,

There is a strange issue or being called bug by some. I have setup OWC 11
and being using msmdpump.dll to connect to Analysis Services 2005 to get the
data and display cubes in the portal developed in ASP.Net 2.0. It works fine
for all the cubes. But after installing latest SP2 , we have noticed that
while browsing certain cubes, like for example filtering operation for
certain cubes, msmdsrv.exe goes for a spin, takes 50 % CPU and seems to hang.
Only after restarting the Analysis Services, the cubes come online. We have
tuned the cubes but its the same result everytime.

We are lost as in if we require more tuning, bug in Analysis
Services/msmdpump.dll?. Any help or hint would be highly appreciated.

vilas

Hi Vilas

I have been struggling with this one for the last couple of months. I have had a call open to MS Support but it seems that this issue has been ported (along with all others) to the next version of SQL. That's the next version not the next SP! SP2 might have been a little more than what you would consider a standard SP. There were some fundamental changes and one of these is causing your porblem. If this is the same issue as mine then you need to ensure that you do not have any Unnatural Hiearchies. OWC cannot handle them. They send MDX that causes your problem. Make all Unnautal Hiearchies into nautural ones and the porblem goes away.

Obviously the problem with that is that some Hiearchies just are not natural. I had to redesign about 50 % of my data warehouse to ensure that I forced each Hiearchy into natural.

I'm looking for a third party alternative to the OWC sooner than I had expected. If you know of any please let me know.

Regards
Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply. Certainly cleared the doubts. However, we went back
to SQL Server 2005 SP1 and everything works well now. It's quiet weird that
Microsoft breaks what they allowed to develop. My question is if future
service packs does not resolve this issue, we will probably have to stay with
SP1 and wait for next version of SQL Server 2005. I have heard even the
sample Adventure Works OLAP DB with SP2 have the same problems.
Bottom Line: Consider SP2 as newer version of SQL Server 2005 probably SQL
Server 2006.

Vilas

Hi Jim,

I have opened a call with Microsoft and they have told us to wait till
Mid-June for a new Roll-In. We are keeping our fingers crossed till then. Are
you using W2003 x64 bit version and SQL Server 2005 64 bit version?

Vilas
