I have no problem getting one of my pc-clients connected to the SQL server
using ODBC. However when I attempt to connect/create another ODBC link on
another client I receive a message stating I don't have permisiion or
something. I am trying to link to the .mdf file that is located on the
C-drive(ON THE SERVER) under programs\microsoft sql
server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA. When I click on the "\MSSQL\" portion I get the
error. I am very new to security settings on SQL, but this seems to pertain
to something else, yes?

thanks,
James

Normally, when you set up a DSN to SQL Server database you don't link to the
MDF file. In the ODBC DSN, you should specify the SQL Server Name and the
Database name, not the MDF file.

You may need to check that the Client protocol is supported and if you use
TCP/IP protocol, the port number also.

The easy way for you to see is to go to the PC that has the working DSN and
go through the steps in the ODBC DSN dialog and check the settings in the
working DSN.

I have tryed to connect Access 2003 to MS SQL Server but have had no luck. I
need step by step instructions. I have looked at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access/HA010345991033.aspx and nowhere in
does it tell you how to do it. Access help does not help at all. I am
starting with blank database and need to link to a SQL database get my soucre
data.

Thank you

The Access Help file (F1) for the version of Access you are using
should give you the information you need. As I recall, for Access 2003
it's File, Get External Data, and then you'll be prompted for the
information to create a DSN that has your connection information. Once
you successfully do that, you'll see a list of tables that you can
link to. HTH,
