[LOG] Cyclical forwarding detected for event 17177

Under SQL Server 2005 Standard SP1

Each day between 12:00 AM and 12:01 AM, receive error in SQL Agent log:

"Date 8/22/2006 12:00:59 AM
Log SQL Agent (Archive #8 - 8/27/2006 4:07:00 PM)

[LOG] Cyclical forwarding detected for event 17177: Event source was
'SERVER' which matches the current forwarding server. The event was not
forwarded"

Also cropped up when I was testing notifications.

Does anyone understand what is meant by "cyclical forwarding" and what
process would be forcing this error routinely at midnight every night?
