I'm trying to upgrade the Default Instance of MSDE 2000 Release A which is
installed with Mixed Mode and strong password to SQL Server 2005 Express in a
Windows 2000 Server with SP4. On the Upgrade Logon Information screen, if I
select SQL Server Authentication Mode, it will give me this message:

SQL Server Setup Cannot Upgrade the specified instance by using SQL Server
Creditial. You must use Windows Authentication creditial for the upgrade.

Thanks for any help.

hi Peter,

I never tried an upgrade... but I do think you can "go on" with the trusted
authentication... when you are done, just use SQL Server Management Studio
Express
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796&displaylang=en),
log in as a local Admin, select the server node and access the instance's
"properties"... select the "Security" tab (ok, it's no longer a "tab", but
hope you'll understand :D ) and set the "Server authentication" property as
required...
then access the Security-Logins node and access the "sa" logins properties..
provide a strong password and verify, in the "Status" tab the login is
"enabled"..

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the reply. I have already done the upgrade using Windows
Authentication. I just want to know why SQL Server Authentication Mode has
problem since it is one of the option during upgrade.

actually I do have no idea, but just a consideration about the big changes
in all metadata structures, as long as the ability (of SQL Server
2005\Express) to support Windows security policies for passwords and the
like..
I never tried it by myself, but this could be a reason... even if it will
require a lot of administration work after upgrade do to standard SQL Server
logins re-creation and sync...
I do not know if this is the cause... just a guess..
