I have a machine running Server 2003 R2 with SQL Server running. I have a
workstation on the same network running Vista Ultimate. Up until about three
weeks ago (middle of January) I was able to connect to the server with no
issues. Then one day I cannot connect to SQL Server or to access the server
via RDC. I can ping the computer and can map drives in both directions. I
can RDC to other machines that I can connected to via VPN and via the
Internet so it is not the work station. Something changed on the server and
I cannot figure out what it is. I have the server firewall turned off as
well as all RAS services. I have updated the server with all of the latest
updates. Can anyone give me some hints as to where to look next.

I ran across a help topic that said to try using the IP address instead of
the computer name if I was having an issue with RDC. I tried the IP address
and now I can connect both via RDC and SQL Management Studio to the server.
I am not sure what happened on the server that would have started to block
the computer name from working. I am up now so this is not a pressing issue.
If anyone has an idea of what might have happened I would appreciate hearing
it.

If you can connect with the IP port then the problem might be with the DNS.
That is, the name you're using for the Server/instance is not being resolved
to the right IP port. This is handled by the DNS service and the SQL Browser
service.
