CLUSTER UPGRADE MESS

We had 2 Active/Passive cluster on Windows 2003 SP2 - SQL Server 2005 EE SP3,
Cumulative patch 1 -------> 32 bit SQL Server on 64 bit O/S.

We wanted to upgrade to SQL Server 2008. First of all, Installation CD
defaulted to X64 directory assuming that since the O/S is 64 bit, SQL Server
must also be 64 bit and that was not the case. We copied the contents of the
X86 directory along with Setup file on the root directory of the CD and then
tried it again.

It worked installing the "Share Components" but not upgrading the Database
engine. It kept telling us there are no components to upgrade and forced us
to exit the upgrade. I worked on the passive node some more and everyting get
secrewd up on the passive node.

I then uninstalled everything on the passive node (SQL Server2008-2005) and
tried to install SQL Server 2005 cluster again but it did not allow me
continue on the VIRTUAL SERVER name. It asked me to enter a new virtual
server name which is not what we want. We want to add the passive node back
into the same cluster.

My co-worked found a page on the internet about adding a node to a cluster
assuming we could install a stand alone SQL Server installation and then
added to cluster but the "adding" part said Because of the clustering rules
you can not add a stand alone installation to a cluster.

So, now we are trying to find a way to add the passive node back into
cluster. What is the best way to do that ?

How can we install SQL Server 2005 with cluster option ? DO we need to
unregister the DNS ?

why would you install 32bit SQL on a 64 bit OS?

32-bit SQL on 64-bit OS (WoW) is not a supported configuration. I am not
surprised you are having problems.
