having an issue installing a 2nd instance on a 2005 sql cluster running on
win2008 R2. It may be simple since i've never done this on 2008 before.

our environment consists of 2 nodes currently running 1 named instance. all
the shared drives are in the SQL Network Name Group - which is the one
virtual server created.

when trying to install a 2nd instance - go through the install, new
instance, and select create sql failover cluster (maybe i should not select
this) - and then it asks me for a new virtual server - but i just want to
install another instance to this same virtual server.

or is it better to create new virtual servers instead of new instances?

You can only have a single instance per virtual server. This is true
regardless of the SQL version.
