I'm tryin to install the client-side tools for SQL Server 2005 (Disk 2 of
2). It installs the required <stuff....- I forget the term> and then it
starts a System Configuration Check. "SQL Server Setup is scanning your
system's configuration." There's no CANCEL button and no X to close. And
it's just been sitting there for three hours. Is there a log file
somewhere? Is this a known problem?

TIA
LAS

The log files are under
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap.

I would kill it and try to start over.

If you connected to the network (usual at workplace) unplug the cable and
see if this helps

I've started over quite a few times (re-boots, because I can't figure out
which job it is in the task manager). I even got a fresh copy of the
installation kit, but it was from my company's network. Can I get it
directly from Microsoft? I couldn't find it when I tried.

The last log file it created was SQLSetup0007_my_user_name_SCC.log.

This is the last thing that was written to it.

Processing article DriveWriteAccess
Openning namespace \\root\cimv2
GetNamespace \\root\cimv2 returned 0 (0x0)
Scc Error: 0 (0x0)
Error code: 0 (0x0)
Calling callback function for reason: 0x4
Callback function returned TRUE

Processing article COMPlus

I'd had to uninstall the 2005 Tools a couple of months ago because my
backlog of Windows Updates failed with a message involving 2005. A couple
of years ago I was working on stuff involving "COMPlus," but, frankly, I'm
not sure what application this involves. Perhaps I need to re-install
that??? Whatever it is?

When I think of it, a colleague had a problem with Setup stalling for a
very long time. The advice I got when consulting my MVP colleagues was
that he should pull the network cable. As it turned out, next day when
he arrived in office, the installation had completed.

But I recall whether his Setup stalled at COMPlus. As a matter of fact,
I think it was elsewhere.

I don't think getting different media will help. Probably something
is hosed with your machine. If you can open a case with Microsoft, they
may be able to save you from having to flatten the disk.
