I am having a problem installing the SSCE31VSTools-ENU.exe package for Visual Studio 2005 Standard with SP1. Here's what I have:
* Smart Device Programmability option installed for VS 2005 Std. * Downloaded and installed VS SP1 (from Microsoft's website dated 12/14/2006.) * SQLServerCE31-EN.msi package has been downloaded and installed (from MS website dated 1/11/2007.)
The error I am getting is: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, ...."
Is this package supported for Visual Studio 2005 Standard with SP1? Or am I missing something?
The same thing happened to me. Here's how to fix it: Get your original VS 2005 installation media. Find the \WCU folder and install SQL Mobile from there. Then try the patch again.

Thanks for that tip, I needed that fix as well. If you don't have tools installed then you don't see Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition in the list of prerequisites components to install in a setup project. I presume a Click Once install would also need a successful install of Tools for it to show up there in it's list of prerequisites as well
I can't believe MS hasn't published something re this stuff up on their Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition page. How did you get the info from Amit Chopra or was that a MVP thing?
Is this only a stuff up, if you happened to have installed SP1 beta or is it more general? What about a new install of VS 2005 and then the Compact stuff. After all this dicking around, uninstalling sp1beta and installing sp1, it might have been faster just to uninstall everything and start over again.

I believe the problem was caused by one of the betas, and uninstalling it removed too much. In any case, I'm glad the tip helped you too. There is also a problem with VS 2005 sp1 and CE 5 device connectivity which has been blogged: http://blogs.msdn.com/vsdteam/rss.xml

I have the exact conditions as OP and this didn't work for me.
