AD Group Inside SharePoint Group Suddenly Stops Working MOSS

We have a SharePoint group that contains several AD groups that has been
working fine.
Suddenly one of the AD groups inside the SharePoint group was no longer
being recognized.
All the users in that one particular AD group inside the SharePoint group
were getting access denied errors.
Users in the other AD groups within that same SharePoint group were fine.

We went to the SharePoint group and removed the problem AD group and then
added it back and everything started working again.
This happened directly following a new subsite that was created with unique
permissions that was immediately deleted.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Does anyone know what could cause
this?
I would appreciate any help you might have with this - it's been a real head
scratcher.
