Hi,

I'm using WSS 3.0, and I'm not getting the search results I expect. I am
doing an incremental crawl each night through the settings in Central Admin.
Then I do a Full Crawl once a week using a Scheduled Task that calls the
following command:

stsadm -o spsearch -action fullcrawlstart

I'm not seeing any errors in the Event Viewer, so we assumed that all was
good with Search.

Now that we are getting more documents into WSS 3.0 we are finding that
documents that should be in the search results for certain terms are not
showing up in the results.

Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this in WSS 3.0? I
would know exactly what to do in Search Express or MOSS, but WSS 3.0 doesn't
seem to have a lot of tools for this.

Thanks,
Brian Hman

Hi Brian,

From your description, you're encountering some issue with the search
functionality in windows sharepoint service 3.0, correct?

Based on my understanding, WSS 3.0 itself only provide a very basic search
service, and this service is focus on the help document search and is quite
limited. For document and other portal content search, the Microsoft Office
Sharepoint Server provide the advanced search functionality. So I'm
wondering whether your server environment is also MOSS equiped or only have
WSS 3.0 installed?

If MOSS does have been installed, thsi should be a MOSS search
troubleshooting issue instead of WSS search problem.

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

Hi Steven,

We only have WSS 3.0 installed. When we had WSS 2.0 the search worked quite
well without a lot of problems. Since we've moved to WSS 3.0 we get a lot of
search results, but we see that a lot of documents are missing.

Any direction is appreciated,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply.

WSS 3.0 itself won't provide much document content based search ability.
From your first message, you've also installed the Microsoft search service
express, correct?

http://www.microsoft.com/enterprisesearch/en/us/search-server-express.aspx

If so, the search service express does help provide some MOSS like search
functionality that can search into document content. As for your problem,
have you checked on those missing documents to see whether there is any
particular similarity on them. For example, whether the problem only occurs
on a certain specific type of document or whether it only occurs when the
document contains (or you search with) some certain key words?

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng
