Get sharepoint to stop prompting to log in?

When accessing our sharepoint server, it repeatedly pops up the login prompt
to an extent that all of our users find really annoying. I'd like to find out
how to address this.

Some background:

We have recently upgraded from WSS 2 to 3, and this issue remains for us.

I've noticed that it seems to be worse on IE7 and/or Vista, but it is a
problem with XP Pro and IE6 also.

We have an active directory server, call it ServerA, and a sharepoint
server, call it ServerB.

Both are on our domain, call it MYDOMAIN. For whatever historical reason,
it's really called MYDOMAIN.local so you can ping ServerA or
ServerA.MYDOMAIN.local and both work when you are internal on the LAN or
VPN'd in.

Externally, we are called MYDOMAIN.com, and we access our sharepoint server
with SSL-only externally, and instead call it Sharepoint externally. So if
you want to access it from the Internet, you use
https://sharepoint.mydomain.com/

In our firewall we also mapped this back to ServerB so if you access
https://sharepoint.mydomain.com/ from the LAN it also works. In fact, we
always use this even on the LAN so that we don't have to send out two
different URLs.

We are a small shop and ServerA generates our SSL certificate for ServerB so
it is not from a trusted source like VeriSign; but we do add *.MYDOMAIN.com
to trusted sites in IE.

When we access other internal resources, like an Intranet that requires
Windows Authentication, we do not have to log in -- it sees we are logged
into our workstations and automatically passes the credentials through.

For Sharepoint, is there a way for it get the credentials from Windows and
only prompt us if necessary? Or, at least is there a way to have it really
remember our login information (instead of just teasing with that check box)?

Try this:
Reducing Authentication prompts with IE7 and SharePoint

The goal is to get IE7 to pass through the username and password of the
user that you are logged on as. The best way to do this is to add the
site you want to the local intranet zone in Internet Explorer. Then
configure the security to automatic logon with current user name and
password. For example, to configure automatic logon for Your domain
open Internet Explorer -> click Tools. From the tools menu Internet
Options select the security tab select Local intranet zone. Click the
sites button then click Advanced button and add YOur domain. Click
Close, click OK, now while still in the Local intranet zone in the
security tab click Custom Level at the bottom. In the security settings
section scroll to the bottom. Under User Authentication -> Logon,
select Automatic logon with current user name and password.

You can use this method for any site that you need to logon with your
current user name and password. However there is a current problem, if
you are opening an office document or opening “explorer view” you will
be prompted for authentication. I am working on a resolution for this
issue.

I believe I followed all the steps correctly, but this had no effect; the
problem persists.

Exactly how many times does a user have to login? I assume after a set
number of times they are finally logged in.

I ahve been researching some issues with Sharepoint with IE7 on Vista
machines and found this it may help out with your mutiple login
requests with share point.

as for me I have no issues with the authentication witht he exception
of being prompt every time I access an office application. I still
have yet to locate the answer to this one...any advice would be
greate.

when you click on a DOC it will ask for username and password, if you
hit escape it will open the DOC and not ask for credentials
again....but I need this to go away

Did you ever resolve this issue? I am having a similar problem with WSS
3.0. Anytime a user opens a Word doc they are prompted for username and pwd,
it's a neverending loop, but if you click 'cancel' the doc opens with no loss
of functionality.

Also, users with Full Control of the site experience the prompt once. After
loginning in one time things work as expected.

I know there's a clue there, I just don't know what it means.

Please decide on only one thread - in this case I'd suggest that as you
have only a "similar" problem, the question should have only gone (as
