Search and w3wp CPU usage

We are having an issue with WSS 3. Our farm consists of the WEb front end
(which is also the serach server) and the database server. Search is
causing the main sharepoint application process (w3wp) to use 100% CPU. If
I stop the windows sharepoint search service, the CPU usage goes to normal
levels.

Has anyone seen this? Is it a known issue? How do I troubleshoot this?
