Explorer view with Sharepoint

We are experiencing the following issue with Explorer view and Sharepoint 2.0:
- If Word or Excel are NOT open and we attempt to open a file in a
library from
Explorer view, that process hangs. The rest of the PC is alive and
well.
We have made sure that WebClient is Enabled. I have seen posts around the
net relating similar problems on XP, Vista, Sharepoint 2.0 and 3.0. There is
some consensus that the issue goes away if you go backwards to IE 6.0 (we are
running 7.0). Any other thoughts/suggestions/confirmations of this problem?
