OK, I installed Win Server 2008, then SPS3.0 with SP1 64-bit. So far so
good. But I'd like to install MOSS 2007 and
a. I can't install the package without SP1
b. I can't install SP1 without the package
c. there doesn't appear to be a MOSS+SP1

Am I supposed to have installed Win Server 2003 first, then SPS, then MOSS,
then SP1 nd perhaps SP1, then Win 2008? Or is there in fact a MOSS+SP1, and
if so, where? Or another route?

(There is no SPS 3.0 - if anything that means MOSS 2007 (the third
version of SPS which would make your sentence crazy - you presumably
mean WSS 3.0)

As far as I know, at the moment only the installation of WSS 3.0 is
supported on Windows Server 2008

Here is the relevant KB article (including more links)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;943587

You are right that the Trial version of MOSS 2007
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3015fde4-85f6-4cbc-812d-55701fbfb563&displaylang=en&tm
/
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2e6e5a9c-ebf6-4f7f-8467-f4de6bd6b831&DisplayLang=en
) is still only available as the version without SP1. Both the WSS 3.0
SP1 and the MOSS 2007 SP1 are available as downloads. Both are required
to upgrade MOSS 2007 to SP1 level

WSS SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4191A531-A2E9-45E4-B71E-5B0B17108BD2&displaylang=en

MOSS 2007 SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD59175C-AD6A-4027-8C2F-DB25322F791B&displaylang=en

In Windows Server *2003* there is the possibility to slipstream the
installation of the two SP1 s by putting them in a particular directory
- see the "Use the Updates folder" section towards the end of
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/f484f5f2-35bb-4d70-bf56-dd1c4c287c721033.mspx?mfr=true

you could attempt to do likewise with Windows Server 2008

Yes, I'm suffering from TLA-itis here!

That did the trick, though I take the point about the configuration not
being supported.

Thanks a lot, Mike.

Good that it worked ! As far as I'm concerned that makes it supported ...

(Note that I wrote "as far as I know" - that was because I couldn't find
any MS paper on how to install MOSS 2007 on Windows Server 2008 RC1 and
there were lots of references around for WSS 3.0 + SP1.)

FYI because I had already installed WSS3+SP1, I only needed to copy the MOSS
2007 installion disk, unpack the SP1 for MOSS under the 64-bit folder, and
run setup - which is slightly different from the Technet article which was
really about installing WSS+updates.

The only problem so far is that MOSS seems very slow, whereas WSS itself
seemed fairly quick. But there are quite a few obvious possibilities there,
including the possibility that I need to do the installation differently
(e.g. WSS3+MOSS2007+ slipstream the SPs). I may have a go at that at some
point. But my overall experience is that I've installed 3 fairly hefty,
new-ish and complex bits of software (Win2008,WSS3+SP1,MOSS+SP1) without
having to backtrack, change sequeence, specify lots of stuff I've not read
up on, etc. etc., which is very reassuring...
