Hey all:

Recently deployed KB194388 (DHCP Client Vulnerability) on our corporate
network via WSUS. Since then several users are compliaining that their PC's
take a long time to boot (hang at "preparing network connections") and that
their logon scripts don't run. Have also seen Service Control Manager
errors stating that the DHCP client hung on startup on the same PC's.

Has anyone else seen this. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I deployed it network-wide on Win2k and all machines are super fast.

I am not certain whether that patch is or is not uninstallable without
checking,
but if it is have you uninstalled from one or two machines to see if the
behavior
disappears? In other words, are you sure it is from this patch rather than
just
coincident with distribution of this patch?

Thanks for your replies.

There is an uninstall string and removing the patch corrected the problem.
At present it looks like it only affected about 10% of the PC it was
installed on.

Thanks again.

OK, so you have definitive indication that it is this patch.
Have you now tried the free PC Safety number to see if
they can assist getting that other 10% patched ??

We have the same issue again only about 2-3 % of fleet but more coming in
daily, we have opened a support call with Microsoft and will update if we get
anything.

We received a fix to test and on one machine is has been successful, the fix
was to edit HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\DependOnService and
append the word "ProtectedStorage" without the quotes, the Reg key is a
REG_MULTI_SZ so if you want to test this use Regedt32, I do not accept any
responsibility if it crashes your machine but it worked on one of ours - I
also have a VBS script to edit this key and append to it, if anybody wants it
email steve....@fifoot-consulting.com

Steve

Hi Steve,

I now wonder if the reason I'm not seeing the problem is that our whole
network is static IP only - we don't use DHCP (although the DHCP client
is still active on machines).

Are you actually using DHCP on client boxes?

And just FYI even when configured with static IPs the DHCP client
runs as it is what does dynamic DNS if you have that in use.
