I don't object with "Karl Levinson's" post, per se.

As far as I know, "Karl Levinson" doesn't officially speak
on behalf of this message forum and/or Microsoft, although
it appears he is an MVP
(http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/).

In any case, it appears he just wanted to post a sort
of "index" for new readers who visit this forum. Thus, his
message was addressed to them.

No Jax, it isn't a 'one size fits all' - its actually a collection of
useful references, material and knowledge which has proven to be
extremely useful to a great many people, myself included.

Karl didn't grant himself MVP status Jax, Microsoft did.

And just so that we're clear about this last point, I'm kind of
guessing that Karl's post was addressed to the groups he posted it to.

OK ? Good.

Surely you have heard of a "FAQ," know what they generally do, why they are
beneficial, and why they are often posted in newsgroups?

I'm only trying to volunteer my time and help. Surely that's a good thing?

To all users of these newsgroups. It's a FAQ. You must have heard of
those....not sure what your issue is with it; you're free to disregard it.
Others may find it useful. Karl is a frequent poster, and is a Microsoft MVP
in recognition of the time he spends *volunteering* to help others. Play
nice with the other kids in here and you will get help when you need it -
attitude counts. Pax. :-)

Hi Karl,

Of course I know what "FAQ's" are. I read your subject line as one sentence
which registered, to me, as a command to those who do reply to OP's, i.e.,
"Read this before posting answers to frequently asked questions!" After
coming back to the post, I see the hyphen and break from Cap's to lower case
letters. My mistake, I apologize for being so harsh.

I see that your intention was good, but I'm afraid the effort was futile.
Most posters come to the NG's and just start typing without making any
effort to find the solution to their problem on their own. Even with a link
that answers the question, it takes too much effort, for many, to read and
sort out the information they need. Many times, I have read posts where the
person said they had "searched all over but couldn't find an answer". When I
entered a key word from their post in Google, I got hits on it immediately.
Why would that work for me and not for them?(go figure)

Cheers, JAX

More like "One size fits 95%..."

Nope. See:

>Who is this addressed to?

Anyone reading the seven newsgroups that Karl routinely posts this to.

A FAQ is a list of Frequently Asked Questions and is common in many
newsgroups, especially technical ones. It is designed to answer most
of the repetitve questions found in the group it is posted to. If
people woul read the FAQ they wouldn't post the same question the last
eight people did just to wait a few hours and receive the same answer.

In fact, if people would use Google they could often get their
problems solved quicker.

You're right - most people don't search first - but the FAQ may help a few
people out and cut down on the number of "how do I stop messenger service
popup" kind of questions.

We all jump the gun in here sometimes and I did a bit of the same myself in
replying to you, so now everybody shake hands and make nice and be happy.

I'm happy, except with myself.

As far as FAQ's being posted here, I maintain that it is futile. The post
will time-out in a day or so and even then, nobody is likely to scroll
through the posts to see it.

Ahh... But the beauty is, it gets indexed in Google, and on
Microsoft's news server hangs around for months. On the web-based
interfaces to the groups it may show for a week or more.

Old-timers usually llok for a FAQ and sometimes a charter before
posting anything.

Yes it certainly is. Anyone with even a little 'computer sense' knows the
value of FAQ. Their use helps to keep the bandwidth down so instead of you
MVPs answering the same simple questions over and over again, you have time
to answer MINE instead ! (Joke alert! JAX)

Keep up the "good work"

You said, "Old-timers usually llok for a FAQ and sometimes a charter before

7KB isn't so big. I chose not to mention the 7KB size of the reply, which
was untrimmed, to the OP.

Yes, this is a frequently posted response to the FAQ. While I agree that we
don't know how much a FAQ reduces the posting volume if at all, it still has
other benefits. 1) it allows myself and some of the others here to quickly
post a link as an answer instead of writing one or more paragraphs and/or
having to search Google for the link. 2) the answers in the FAQ are longer
and I would hope more complete than manually typing a quick response...
posting a link from a FAQ might arguably be more consistent and have
theoretically been publicly vetted by others. 3) you can't tell someone
"you should have read the FAQ first" until there is a FAQ. 4) if it only
reduces the posting volume a little, that's still a good thing IMHO.

kind regards,

karl
