Whenever I open an office app, I get two dialog boxes "Please wait while
Windows configures Norton antivirus 2005", then on top of that "Norton
Antivirus 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and
reinstall". When I click ok on the second box, they go away and the office
app opens. When I first installed norton av 2005 in Dec 2004, it gave the
exact same dialog boxes every time that I booted my pc. Norton tech support
told me than that it was either I moved def files (how or why I would do
this??) or is was a corrupted def download and that I would need to
uninstall and reinstall norton av. Which I did, and after several more def
updates it started the same dialog boxes at boot.
Each time that I contacted tech support they gave me the same solution. When
I asked why I need to keep doing this, that never got a response from them.
Finally, the seventh time, I just left it and closed the dialog boxes at
each boot. Six uninstall / reinstalls was more then enough. Especially,
since it was obvious that the seventh would lead to the eighth, to the
ninth, etc. I asked again about the need to keep doing this, and their
response was that either I moved def files or it was caused by a corrupted
def download.
Last month I formatted my HDD and reinstalled my xp pro and norton, and now
I get the exact same dialog boxes as I used to get at boot, but now I get
them when I open an office app. Note, not every time I open an office app,
but
more then 90% of the time. To this norton says that they need more info,
since I did not make myself clear. I said what I said above and offered to
send a screen shot. Then just asked for more info and no mention of SS. So,
I sent it with further / greater detail of my condition about three weeks
ago and no response.
Now I have another issue, and I see that tech support is no longer
available. I have had it set to do a full scan every Friday, since it was
installed, but the last two Fridays it did not.
Another issue that was actually a forerunner to the above two is that it
finds file del6.tmp threat adware.180Search and file del6.tmp threat
adware.zangosearch, both items info "The file
E:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-682003330-1004336348-2147153767-1003\De3\Del6.tmp is a
Adware threat.". Now my global recycle bin is empty, However each partition
has a recycler directory and E:\Recycler dir has a dir called
S-1-5-21-682003330-1004336348-2147153767-1003, but looking in that dir I
find no De3\Del6.tmp These were first found by norton av shortly after it
was installed. Norton does have a tool to get rid of 180search, but this
tool does not find it. Their instructions to remove zango is to go to
add/remove and remove it, but it is not there. Tech support just said that
norton av removes virus' not adware.
I have had several updates to my spybot, ad-adware, and spywareblaster and
they do not find those. Any ideas? What happens if I delete my E:\Recycler
contents?
Paul
The recycler directory preserves deleted files so that they can be
undeleted. If you empty the recycler directory, the files in it will soon
(as the released space is used) no longer be able to be undeleted. What did
you think the recycler directory did?
As for the 'Please wait while Windows reconfigures....', message, you
haven't given enough information, but just guessing that by 'office app' you
mean an Microsoft Office application, try reinstalling Microsoft Office.
Or do nothing and keep complaining.

When you are ^clean^ of all type of malware,if any malware found,
remove Norton and try:
1. Kaspersky Labs. AV personal 5.0.388
http://www.kaspersky.com/trials?chapter=146481750
(30 day trial)
or
2.Panda Software Platinum Internet Security 2005
http://www.pandasoftware.com/about/resp_social/children_internet/ally.htm
(90 day trial)
When you have tried them ( for example for a week or more, you may buy one of
them because they are many times better than Norton is )
!!! Note, when installing Panda Platinum, uncheck their firewall protection if
you have Win XP SP2
And at the end,if your problem goes on,you can back-up all your files and
re-install Windows with full format. So you'll have fresh install and would
become but without Norton.
Malware removal instructions :
1. Download the necessary software

>>> Optional
There are some malwares that can destroy the internet connection
when you try to remove them. That's why you may get that program
that could restore your internet connection.
I haven't tried it but lots of people like them.
Win Sock XP Fix

2. Create a back-up of all your critical information
This is just an option.
You should check it for viruses later.
3. Run a Firewall
>> Windows XP
has integrated firewall -
Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) for SP1 and
Windows Firewall (WF) for SP2
>> Windows versions different from XP
They do not have integrated firewall ,they have to use software firewall.
!!! Use only 1 firewall !!!
4. Windows Updates
Connect to internet and

When the scan is finished,
DO NOT restart ,if you have Win XP or ME
>>> System Restore (for XP and ME only)
Because of the fact malware is a program,
System Restore also stores all malware tracks and when restarting,it can
replicate some infected system stuff and the malware will be back !!!
So you need to delete all the restore points before restarting :
>>> Right click on My Computer->Properties->System Restore
Check Turn off system restore.Click OK
>>> Restart the in Normal mode.
11. For better performance ,it is advisable to check your hard drives for
errors
Open My computer .
Then right click on the hard drive you want to check -> Properties -> Tools
In the error-checking area ,click "Check now" to start the process.
>>> At the end (when the system is malware-free)
again Right click on My computer->Properties->System Restore
Uncheck Turn off system restore ,so you'll have your Restore function ON.
After these, your computer should be clean !

seems a bit ambiguous. Do you mean uncheck Panda's firewall or XP's
firewall? If Panda's is XP's firewall is it really better than Panda
Platinum?

Yes, you were complaining. You placed more emphasis on your dissatisfaction

Thank you for your reply. My question was not meant as either a criticism
or a rebuke so please accept my apologies if you found it to be so. I think
that if English is not your' first language then you have mastered it very
well. Certainly it is as good as mine is and English is my 1st (and only)
language. When I read my post again I see that even my post is not clear:
>> firewall? If Panda's is XP's firewall is it really better than Panda
>> Platinum?
To be clear in what I meant I should have written:
"If you meant uncheck Panda Platinum's firewall then is it really true that
XP's firewall is better than Panda's firewall?"
I believe that XP's firewall notifies the user of alerts on incoming traffic
only. Most of the other recommendations that I have seen in these NG's
suggested that the firewall of the antivirus software be left running and
the XP firewall be disabled by unchecking it. I had therefore prejudged the
recommendation that you were giving, and, because my prejudgement did not
agree with what you were saying, I thought that it was possible to read into
your words instructions to uncheck either the Panda or XP firewall depending
on exactly how the reader read it.
Once again my apologies.

You are right.
Although Windows firewall has only incoming protection ,I think everything
from Microsoft is better from the others.
The incoming is the most important.

There are four common attributes than can be assigned to files and
directories in Windows operating systems:
Read Only = R
Hidden = H
System = S
Archive = A.
In Windows Explorer you can choose to display the attributes of files and
directories and can choose whether or not to display Hidden and System files
at all. The purpose of the Hidden attribute is to prevent the user from
even seeing files that shouldn't be messed with. It is to protect an
unknowledgeble user from mistakes. System files shouldn't be messed with
because they are critical to proper system operation.
You were told to empty the \Recycler directories. Those directories are
marked Hidden because the contents are not normally dealt with directly. It
is to protect you from yourself.
You really are making this much more difficult that necessary. Your
attitude is getting in the way of your understanding.
