Whenever I open an office app, I get two dialog boxes "Please wait while Windows configures Norton antivirus 2005", then on top of that "Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall". When I click ok on the second box, they go away and the office app opens. When I first installed norton av 2005 in Dec 2004, it gave the exact same dialog boxes every time that I booted my pc. Norton tech support told me than that it was either I moved def files (how or why I would do this??) or is was a corrupted def download and that I would need to uninstall and reinstall norton av. Which I did, and after several more def updates it started the same dialog boxes at boot. Each time that I contacted tech support they gave me the same solution. When I asked why I need to keep doing this, that never got a response from them. Finally, the seventh time, I just left it and closed the dialog boxes at each boot. Six uninstall / reinstalls was more then enough. Especially, since it was obvious that the seventh would lead to the eighth, to the ninth, etc. I asked again about the need to keep doing this, and their response was that either I moved def files or it was caused by a corrupted def download.
Last month I formatted my HDD and reinstalled my xp pro and norton, and now I get the exact same dialog boxes as I used to get at boot, but now I get them when I open an office app. Note, not every time I open an office app, but more then 90% of the time. To this norton says that they need more info, since I did not make myself clear. I said what I said above and offered to send a screen shot. Then just asked for more info and no mention of SS. So, I sent it with further / greater detail of my condition about three weeks ago and no response.
Now I have another issue, and I see that tech support is no longer available. I have had it set to do a full scan every Friday, since it was installed, but the last two Fridays it did not.
Another issue that was actually a forerunner to the above two is that it finds file del6.tmp threat adware.180Search and file del6.tmp threat adware.zangosearch, both items info "The file E:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-682003330-1004336348-2147153767-1003\De3\Del6.tmp is a Adware threat.". Now my global recycle bin is empty, However each partition has a recycler directory and E:\Recycler dir has a dir called S-1-5-21-682003330-1004336348-2147153767-1003, but looking in that dir I find no De3\Del6.tmp These were first found by norton av shortly after it was installed. Norton does have a tool to get rid of 180search, but this tool does not find it. Their instructions to remove zango is to go to add/remove and remove it, but it is not there. Tech support just said that norton av removes virus' not adware.
I have had several updates to my spybot, ad-adware, and spywareblaster and they do not find those. Any ideas? What happens if I delete my E:\Recycler contents?
Paul wrote, in part: | What happens if I delete my E:\Recycler contents?
The recycler directory preserves deleted files so that they can be undeleted. If you empty the recycler directory, the files in it will soon (as the released space is used) no longer be able to be undeleted. What did you think the recycler directory did?
As for the 'Please wait while Windows reconfigures....', message, you haven't given enough information, but just guessing that by 'office app' you mean an Microsoft Office application, try reinstalling Microsoft Office.
Or do nothing and keep complaining.

Well, seem strange and nasty . First, follow my malware removal instructions so that they would help you remove the junk,if any. When you finish with them, you may uninstall Norton and ,of course, try another securty software that is definitely better that Norton.
When you are ^clean^ of all type of malware,if any malware found, remove Norton and try:
When you have tried them ( for example for a week or more, you may buy one of them because they are many times better than Norton is )
!!! Note, when installing Panda Platinum, uncheck their firewall protection if you have Win XP SP2
And at the end,if your problem goes on,you can back-up all your files and re-install Windows with full format. So you'll have fresh install and would become but without Norton.
Malware removal instructions : 1. Download the necessary software
There are some malwares that can destroy the internet connection when you try to remove them. That's why you may get that program that could restore your internet connection. I haven't tried it but lots of people like them.
> SpyBot Search and Destroy > Ad-Aware SE Personal > Microsoft Antispyware > CWShredder
6. Delete all the Internet Explorer's temporary stuff
Start -> Settings- > Control Panel -> Internet Options
There ,on the General Tab you will see where you can delete
>>internet temporary files >>cookies >>history
Delete them all.
7. Delete all Temporary files
| Windows XP users (all new versions) |
The path is : C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp Delete all files from this folder and also C:\Windows\Temp
| Windows 98 users (all old versions) |
The path is : C:\Windows\Temp
8. Remove any unwanted programs
Boot in Safe Mode (see how below) Then ,in Safe Mode, Start - Settings – Control Panel – Add /Remove programs See if you have any unknown /unwanted software installed- toolbars and/or known spy programs. Remove them with the REMOVE button. Also check for tracks of these programs in C:\Program files and delete,if any. Then restart with booting in Normal Mode .
Boot in Safe Mode and install the antivirus software <In Safe Mode, because there are viruses that have the ability to damage an antivirus while installing it>
How to boot your computer in Safe Mode
Do this by repeatedly typing F8 while Windows is starting before Windows logo appears. Then you'll open the BIOS menu where you can choose to boot the hard drive in SAFE MODE
(If you are XP user ,find more about Safe Mode in Help and Support Center ; Start-Help and Suport)
@ Update the antivirus and scan with it
Boot in Normal Mode and update it. Make sure you have all functions ON (scanning all files, heuristic, disinfect, scanning for other threats...)
Perform a full scan in Normal Mode first Then boot in Safe Mode and also perform a scan
@ While still in Safe Mode, scan with these
>> SpyBot S&D >> Ad-Aware SE Personal >> Microsoft Antispyware >> CWShredder
and remove the junk !!! They must have already been updated !!!
When the scan is finished, DO NOT restart ,if you have Win XP or ME
>>> System Restore (for XP and ME only)
Because of the fact malware is a program, System Restore also stores all malware tracks and when restarting,it can replicate some infected system stuff and the malware will be back !!! So you need to delete all the restore points before restarting :
>>> Right click on My Computer->Properties->System Restore
Check Turn off system restore.Click OK
>>> Restart the in Normal mode.
11. For better performance ,it is advisable to check your hard drives for errors Open My computer . Then right click on the hard drive you want to check -> Properties -> Tools In the error-checking area ,click "Check now" to start the process.
>>> At the end (when the system is malware-free)
again Right click on My computer->Properties->System Restore Uncheck Turn off system restore ,so you'll have your Restore function ON.
After these, your computer should be clean ! If you do not understand something, you can post again and ask for information

"when installing *Panda Platinum, uncheck their(Panda Software's) * firewall protection if you have Win XP SP2 " means exactly what it is written (by me).Uncheck their=Panda's firewall protection ,if you have Win XP SP 2 (because the user would have 2 firewall which would conflict with each other.

Dear Paul, Mr.Weldon has written what the recycler directory do. It keeps the files that you have deleted and then you many empty the Recycle bin so all files will be deleted.
For the help you are looking for,you are welcome to have a look at my post. Nice day !

More info? How about the identification of the programs you were starting when Norton gave the error message? Did you try reinstalling Microsoft Office, or did I guess wrong as to what you meant by 'office app'.
Yes, you were complaining. You placed more emphasis on your dissatisfaction with Symantec customer support than on information that might help indicate a solution.

Thank you for your reply. My question was not meant as either a criticism or a rebuke so please accept my apologies if you found it to be so. I think that if English is not your' first language then you have mastered it very well. Certainly it is as good as mine is and English is my 1st (and only) language. When I read my post again I see that even my post is not clear:
>> firewall? If Panda's is XP's firewall is it really better than Panda >> Platinum?
To be clear in what I meant I should have written:
"If you meant uncheck Panda Platinum's firewall then is it really true that XP's firewall is better than Panda's firewall?"
I believe that XP's firewall notifies the user of alerts on incoming traffic only. Most of the other recommendations that I have seen in these NG's suggested that the firewall of the antivirus software be left running and the XP firewall be disabled by unchecking it. I had therefore prejudged the recommendation that you were giving, and, because my prejudgement did not agree with what you were saying, I thought that it was possible to read into your words instructions to uncheck either the Panda or XP firewall depending on exactly how the reader read it.
Once again my apologies.

I believe that the film magnate Samual Goldwin never quite came to terms with the English languish and used to get very annoyed when people at him. One day he burst out, "You people! You think that I speak English no damn bad but I know I speak English no damn good!" <g>

Yes, and did you reinstall Microsoft Office? And what are the results? Yes, and did you delete the contents of the recycle directories? And what are the results?

I already said that I deleted contents of the recycle directory. U say dir:\recycler is to keep deleted files. So, why then is it hidden and why does no one tell me to delete the E:\recycler contents?
no, i did not uninstall and reinstall office.

because this right now is still a clean install. norton is a problem, but it is a popular program, so these issues may be fixable, based on other peoples experience. And it is already paid for.

PS: I started doing all your initial suggestions when I first read your first reply. I am still doing those things and none have found those two items. I think that norton lies about them. Maybe I should throw norton in the garbage.

I already said that I deleted contents of the recycle directory. U say dir:\recycler is to keep deleted files. So, why then is it hidden and why does no one tell me to delete the E:\recycler contents?

There are four common attributes than can be assigned to files and directories in Windows operating systems: Read Only = R Hidden = H System = S Archive = A.
In Windows Explorer you can choose to display the attributes of files and directories and can choose whether or not to display Hidden and System files at all. The purpose of the Hidden attribute is to prevent the user from even seeing files that shouldn't be messed with. It is to protect an unknowledgeble user from mistakes. System files shouldn't be messed with because they are critical to proper system operation.
You were told to empty the \Recycler directories. Those directories are marked Hidden because the contents are not normally dealt with directly. It is to protect you from yourself.
You really are making this much more difficult that necessary. Your attitude is getting in the way of your understanding.

I know about attributes, hidden and sys dirs-files. What I was told still does not compute. "The recycler is to hold files deleted, in case they are needed" But it is hidden, so how would I even know about it? And it was kinda suggested that I could delete these adware files which are listed as being in my recycler, but he keeps saying delete from your recycle bin, which I did last month! It is like talking about the recycler, but saying recycle bin. Clear as mud.
I was never: "You were told to empty the \Recycler directories". BTW, there is only one dir in one recycler that is of topic.

How could we even know about it.
I am telling you this for third time.If you have re-installed Windows XP many time so you have big experience in this. Create a back-up ,format the hard drive, install Win XP,enable the firewall, get all the updates ,try another av .
>>It is like talking about the recycler, but saying
recycle bin.
Yes it is
And from your first post: The recycle bin/s/ should be emptied.
Best wishes !
