First - find the perfect operating system for me - one that never gets
updates/patches and never has security holes in it... We will all switch
immediately - and for that fantastic millisecond that it remains
unblemished - we will all be pleased. Then hacked. ;-)
Second - there are many security products out there that you would not have
to pay anything for. Some security features (Windows Firewall) are built
into the modern Windows OS. Others - like AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, etc - are
not built-in - but neither are they 100% necessary depending on the
usage/user of said device. (Even the firewall may be overkill if the
computer is not used on a network/internet at any point in its life -
however unlikely that may sound to you.)

The amount and quality of free software for computers (no matter your OS of
choice) is astounding really - and not limited to security software by any
stretch of the imagination. If you are paying for security software - that
is your choice in not learning about the alternatives and of better ways to
manage your own computer.
There are people out there who have no software firewall, no antivirus and
no antispyware software and they utilize their computer on the Internet
daily using nothing more than common computing sense. I don't recommend
it - because we all have our off-days and can make a bad decision or
incorrect click at any moment - it's the old "ounce of prevention is equal
to a pound of cure" thing...
There's very little in life that is actually free - whether it takes up your
time, requires your effort or if it requires your cash - free is not
something that usually actually exists.

| i've always use ms valid software, paid loadsa dosh for it, recommended ms
| above others and then have to continue paying for flaws in the software. i'm
| talking about operating systems primarily. i used the 1-care for the 90 day
| trial, and although it was slow felt secure ms was protecting my network.
| why is this security not free?

Dump it.
You can get Avira AntiVir for free and it is an excellent anti virus application.

Actually, it is more than that. With the current state of active
malware it may seem that way, most of what's out there is
avoidable using just safe computing practices. However, safe
computing practices *includes* the use of scanning software
for the two kinds of malware that get past the otherwise safe
practices.
Some types of worms and viruses don't require unsafe practices
in order to infiltrate a system. Some worms attack software flaws
before you get the chance to address the flaw - or are even made
aware that there is a flaw. The user suffers even through no fault
of their own. Same for some kinds of viruses - they enter through
trusted software. They hide within another program you have no
reason to distrust. That kind of virus can use the worm as a delivery
method - as a payload written into it, or as an infection of it. In
other words, a software flaw can allow a virus to be executed on
your system by a worm. That virus could possibly infect a progam
that you yourself wrote. You could distribute that program to any
of your friends (they trust you implicitly) and it could infect their
files and propagate further to other hosts by way of worm mode.
Malware detection will still be a necessary part of safe practices as
long as these ingress channels are open.
Successful safe computing *without* scanning is just luck - or
isolationism.
Mine is free. I use Avast, which sometimes updates more than once a day,
and a free anti-spyware.
But remember that no anti-virus or anti-spyware program will catch
everything. The only way to really be safe is to practice safe browsing. I
have not had an anti-virus or anti-spyware program actually catch anything
except for one machine that was already infected when I got it home from the
store.

Security comes in depths and technology
Windows Firewall / Windows Defender is Free
With Anti-malware / Ant-spyware Security that’s is not free or that are paid
their products come with a much stronger kick in comparison to those that
are "free" security tools, understand the basic software ( windows operating
system ) alone are not free then what more to those protecting and only that
but maintenance of the said efficiency of their security services being
offered to your choose Operating System or Application and also proactively
research about those emerging threats you're just about to encounter as well
as add the "extra power to remove, protect and deflect" bad things you may
come across voluntary and involuntarily while using your PC at home/work.
This companies who offer security has cost overhead as well with engineers
and researchers under their employment sleeves to maintain the efficiency of
the software you purchase from them "with updates" making sure yours, your
family's and your business way of computing life is safer and better under
their subscription services length offered.
