In addition, when I double click the Outlook item, the Project opens and the
file is opened from SharePoint in read only mode. When I try and save it,
the save-as dialog defaults to My Documents, and I tediously have to navigate
to SharePoint fiddle with file names and checking in/out to get it to save.
Surely there is a viewer for .mpp files so I can quickly browse my project
files in Outlook without using the browser and SharePoint. And surely there
is a way to open .mpp files from Outlook (that are in Sharepoint) in edit
mode.
Thanks for your help.

There are 3rd party viewers available ... whether they are fast enough
for you, I do not know as I have no experience with these products.
Project and SharePoint are not as "friendly" with one another as Word,
Excel, etc.
I recommend you do it this way.
: when in SharePoint via Internet Explorer, right mouse click on the
link and "save as target" somewhere on your PC. My Documents works fine.
After the download complete, press the "Open" button to open the file
in Project.
Don't:
- double click on the SharePoint file link.
- check out and check in the file just to browse it. Only check out if
you intend to make changes).
- expect Outlook to be a Project viewer and have any role whatsoever.
Check out a Microsoft Project Viewer such as Steelray Project Viewer.
