Thanks.

If you have PowerPoint 2001 the Clip Gallery should work automatically to
put clips into the gallery.
For all versions you will find clip art from Microsoft here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/design/creative/mmgallry.asp
The clips from this site won't automatically populate the clip gallery.
You'll have to use the import feature if you want to put these into the
gallery.

Right. As designed. But have you tried Jim's suggestion and attempted to
import them into the clip gallery? That's the application that recognizes
them. Or should.
I tried to download the item I needed to my desktop but got a message that I
needed to either A) choose a helper application B) choose a plug-in or C)
save file to disk as. So, I have tried a myriad of different helper
applications, plug-ins and extensions, etc. But when I try to import the
resulting file into the clip gallery they are still not recognizable. I did
get one of them to "open" (ha ha) in Freehand and as an IE document but what
I saw was just lines of dingbat type. I've even tried placing them directly
into my PowerPoint presentation (that's a nono). Nothing seems to work. I've
all but given up on Microsoft's Design Gallery and gone to another clipart
sight.
The website that Jim suggested works just fine. I can download those images
(limited though they may be) and import them into the clip gallery and then
place them into my presentation. My problem lies with the Design Gallery.

Following the instructions in PowerPoint's help section, I was able to
import the '.cil' file(s) downloaded from Microsoft's Design Gallery.
Once you have selected 'Insert Clipart' and 'Import', you have to select
'Clip Gallery Live Files' from the 'Show' popup menu.

Susan, there's not much you can do. Only Clip Gallery 5.0 for the
Macintosh can read the CIL format. It comes with Office 2001, so
upgrading is a good idea, you'll be able to take all those CIL files
you've downloaded and doubleclick each one and have them add themselves
to Clip Gallery 5.0.

Try C:
Then follow the earlier instrux to import it into the clip gallery.
I did try that and still it is not recognizable. However, I'm leaning toward
the response I got from Kedamono -- that there's not much I can do except to
wait until I upgrade to 2001. But thanks for all your help.

Take everything I've suggested, add Kedamono's comments, stir well, fish out
the stuff I added to the mix and most likely you'll have gems of truth. <g>
He's the guy to pay attention to.
