Older IPAq synch with Vista Outook

My ipaq device may be too old and is not supported by Vista. The model
is 3135 (I also have 3150) and the OS is CE 3.0.

It was able to sync with Outlook on my other PCs which had XP with
USB, but it does not work for Vista.
Windoes Mobile Device Center is installed, but in Device manager the
device has message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". IfI try to
update the driver, the massage says: "Please contact your device
manufacturer".

Is there any way to do this synchronization? May be anything besides
the USB connection?

You are in a catch 22. With Vista you must use WMDC, but it is only
backwards compatible to PPC 2003. Your iPaq is Pocket PC 2000. Win7 has an
XP emulation mode (downloadable), but honestly don't know if an earlier
version of ActiveSync would run in it, and sync an early PPC.

As Sven pointed out, WMDC will only sync devices running PPC 2003 or newer.

You're going to be stuck with 3rd-party sync tools, unless you go back to
syncing with an XP PC (or Sven's Activesync on XP inside Win7 idea works.)

I recommend Funambol.com, an open-source syncML-based solution, but this
will require internet access on both the PC and the device. It's a
three-part solution: a client application for the device (the most recent
versions only work on WM5+, you'll need to go back to Funambol version 3.x
for that iPaq, IIRC,) a plug-in for Outlook on the PC, and a Funambol
server, which can either be the current server software installed on your
PC, or you can use existing free or commercial servers available on the
internet. A decent free one is available at America Online- sign up for a
free AOL account and then go to http://aolsync.aol.com for instructions to
set up the sync.

I haven't tried XP mode as Sven suggests, but ActiveSync definitely does
work with XP (or older OS's) in ordinary Virtual PC. Only problem is
that USB is not accessible from VPC so you need to use serial instead.
Slower but it works. Not sure if you can connect to Outlook in Vista
though. You might have to run Outlook in the VPC as well.

The XP emulation in Win 7 is supposed to be significantly different than
either compatibility mode in Vista, or running in a Virtual Machine. I still
don't know if it would work, but it would be an interesting test of how well
it does what it is supposed to.

Are you sure VPC doesn't support USB? According to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ , version 2007 does.

Another question is whether your hardware can run VPC 2007 at all - it
requires hardware virtualization support, which only C2D (and similar)
CPU's support (and not even all of them; also depending on the mainboard
maker & BIOS) - not earlier ones.

If it doesn't work, definitely give a try to VirtualBox, my personal
favorite (particularly because my Thinkpad t42p can't run VPC 2007 at
all...) - it also supports USB.
