Is anyone having problems with the Activesync (4.1 or 4.2) application
window minimising and then failing to restore?

I can sync via AS without any problem at all whatsoever but if I
double-click the Microsoft Activesync button in the taskbar it fails to
maximise. I have no problem connecting via USB and I can access
'Connection Settings' and the like. I just cannot restore the window
which is quite frustrating when I do have conflicts and want to try to
resolve them because the user interface is invisible, so I can't really
see what's going on.

I saw a previous post whilst running AS 4.1 whereby it suggested
uninstalling 4.1 (and removing all instances of AS in the regsitry)
then installing 4.2. I did this and it ran ok for about 3 days but then
low and behold the window vanished again and I cannot restore it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The problem is that, somewhere along the line, the position of the restored
window was saved incorrectly to the registry. The position which was
actually saved is way off-screen, so you can't get to the window to move it
or even see it, probably. The main problem with this bug is that, even if
you uninstall AS, it doesn't remove whatever entry is fixing the position
when you remove it. So, one way to approach it would be to uninstall AS,
then scan the registry with RegEdit or your choice of editors for any AS
entries and delete them. When you reinstall AS, the default position for
the window should be used and all should be well. I'm looking for the
specific entry to tell you what to set to fix the problem without uninstall,
but it's a slow process...

I think that this is the item that you'd need to edit to put the window back
on the display:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
"WCESMGR Windowplacement"="0,1,-1,-1,-1,-1,392,255,758,565"

Those are my current settings, but you should be able to move the window
around, once you can see it again.

Paul thank you very much for your help here Mate. I entered the
suggested co-ordinates and they worked like a charm!

Thanks again - although I hsten to add that its a little sad that
Microsoft haven't sorted this out yet.

It's unclear what's causing it. I'm sure it would be fixed if you could
provide a set of steps to duplicate it. It's happened to me exactly once,
about 10 months ago and not once since. If you have steps to reproduce it,
send them to astell <at> microsoft <dot> com, as this is your best chance of
a long-term solution (post here, too, and maybe some MVPs will remember the
next time we're talking to the AS guys).

I was having the same issue and found the reg key that controled the positon
of ActiveSync.
Keep in mind, changing values in the registry may make your Windows
unstable, but this one entry change has little potential impact.

<HKEY_CURRENT_USER><Software><Microsoft><Windows CE Services>

Key = WCESMGR Windowplacement
Value = 0,1,-32000,-32000,-1,-1,366,204,732,538

The value places the windows directly in the middle of my screen while using
1280 x 1024 resolution.
