InstallLocation property of the product is blank after an update is installed and then uninstalled

I install the product, and ARP (Vista) happily shows its
"InstallLocation".
Then I install a patch for the product, installlocation is still in
place.
Now, after uninstalling the patch, installlocation is blank.

What special actions should be done with the patch to preserve this
value?
