When using the paper clip in the preview pane, a dialog is presented each
time prompting to either Save or Open attachments. There's also an option to
disable it or 'not show it next time' I don't recall the exact wording.
I disabled it to confirm images would open by default using an external
viewer, which they do, and went to restore the prompt but don't find the
damn thing anywhere.
I checked Tools in OE and IE6 and don't see anything. Even checked TFM and
it describes how to open or save attachments but makes no mention at all of
disabling the dialog. I paged through Google and found discussions of
everything but that. Anyone know where to re-enable this? Thanks.
Start | Run and type in:
regedit
OK | HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Identities | GUID (Long series of letters &

Find the correct one in the right hand pane and delete it, or change the
value to 0, (zero).

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't see an obvious choice although I
did manage to toggle the Toolbar off and on. ;) Here's an alphabetical list
of what's there if anyone can spot it I'd be most grateful. I looked through
the other keys underneath and didn't see anything there either.

That's actually how I read it at first but decided I'd misunderstood when I
saw that one doesn't exist here. This is what I do see, and appreciate your
time.

OK. That is where you should see it.
Just to clarify, you are not using the problem machine to post. Is this
correct? I ask because your post suggests Win XP/SP2 and your posting
machine is not XP. Win 2K possibly?
In Regedit, is there more than one identity listed? Is it possible that you
are not looking in the correct one?
The Do Not Show Dialogs key is not in the registry by default, but it should
be automatically created the very first time you check a Do Not Show Me This
Again box in OE for such a warning, but only for the identity in use at the
time.
If you only have one identity listed in Regedit, and are only using/have one
identity in OE, then the only option right now would be to create a new
identity to cure the problem.
You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.

No just one. Anything's possible but in this case I couldn't make that
mistake.

Thank you, I did some reading and apparently Outlook uses the same approach.
Switch it off in the GUI and back on in the registry. It would be difficult
to describe
my opinion of that in a family group, half-baked doesn't do it justice.
Re-enabling
all of them should really be included in the Tools function.

I can tell you on that installation there has only ever been one identity.

And it keeps on getting stranger. From your OP:

</qp>
Did you disable the prompt in the exact same way as you just did now by
checking the box: "Do not show........"?
Is this OE6 or 5x? I wouldn't think there should be a difference in this
area.
Create a new identity. You need not enter all the account details to test. I
just want to see if the missing prompt shows in a new ID, which it should.

OE6
Header shows:
Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1409
Help/About shows:
Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123
It should be patched to whatever level WUD offered sometime back, but
I can't say when without checking the history. I probably should have said
for me personally OE has been on the shelf as a bad memory for a very
long time.

Done. Yes the "Open Attachment Warning" was displayed to the new
identity when opening an attachment in the preview frame. Wonderful.
OK. Disabled this again in the New Identity and checked the registry.
There is no "Do Not Show Dialogs" key for the New Identity. I think
at this point the isssue becomes 'how bad do you want to know?'.
I don't mind running an issue down and certainly appreciate your interest,
but think about what's going on here. Sure feels like debugging to me
and for what? To toggle a security feature back on. It's taking
newsgroup support, registry editing, and a complete reconfiguring
of the app to set up a new identity. That fails it flat for intuitive and is
fixing to fail it on doability. I can see tech support at this point
starting
to reach for the 'reinstall Windows' button. :-/ Bugger!
Question: OE imported e-mail messages from the main identity easily
but I didn't find an option to import News. Is that not possible?
Thanks again,

News neither Imports or Exports.

Ronald Sommer
You can export and import the news accounts, but groups will have to be
subscribed to once again.
You should not see the Don't Show Dialogues key in the new identity unless
you have checked your first Do Not Show Me This Again box. Why it wasn't
there in your old ID is a mystery, but stranger things have happened with
OE.
If you can live without the prompt is your choice. Could/should it be easier
to toggle on and off? Maybe, but the OE team was disbanded in 2006 as OE in
no longer being produced, so even a protest by every user of OE would not
make it happen.

I would never have made the connection that mail and news attachments are
considered downloads in this respect. Thank you so much for the solution.

That page may be the first complete treatment of the subject I saw. Can't
remember how long ago that's been but it's still an often referred site in
the binary groups and on other web pages as well.
Thanks again for your time and the reply.
Thanks for the confirmation, it's easy to overlook things. Seems like I've
read .dbx can be introduced in a way that makes them usable, but guess that
would be a different topic and probably explained elsewhere.

Mysteries can be fun so long as you can still boot, glad to say I
learned several things from this one.

Sorry, it's not my intention to nit pick OE, even with the prompt disabled
'Save Attachments' is still available and that would be convenient for me.
Actually when a person is using it for binary groups and the Preview Window
is used, the attachment has already been opened in order to display an
image. In that case I don't see the difference in sending it to an external
app.
I see even in that state there's another dialog which can't be disabled if
the attachment is an .exe or .scr that forces the choice of save or open.
That would still protect a person from inadvertantly opening one with a
deceptive filename even if they have disabled the initial prompt.
Those were the only two I tested and I should probably make the effort to
verify it works for the whole list of dangerous file types but suppose
that's a question for another thread. Thanks again for the help.

Nothing to be sorry about. I am no advocate for Outlook Express or MS in
general. Just wanted to let you know that there will never be any changes in
OE. Heck, the Windows Mail team was disbanded at the same time. (Smells to
me that MS realized that WinMail was not going to be the savior e-mail
client very early on).

The setting is really geared for IE. And then OE piggybacked on it for
similar effect, as it does for other things in IE such as print settings
and HTML rendering.

Have always kept tabs on OE but that's news to me about Windows Mail. A
person would need to overlook a lot to not acknowledge OE as a pretty fair
e-mail getter especially for the price. My main objection as a non-user are
the near hysterics it continues to generate in users each time they
see--Code! You'd think they saw a friggin' ghost, still. It would be a great
thing if they were directing one another to 3rd party solutions but I find
that isn't often the case. The thought has occured to me that if MS were
ever called into question for creating a filesharing app, they would have a
good defense. ;)
Nothing to do with you though. The OP is ecstatic, single-click full screen
graphics, no more scrolling, and one less shriek. I'd call that full
resolution of the issue.
Thanks again.
