Have a friend, his MB died. We want to pull his email addresses, emails off
the HD. Thinking of using Eudora or Incredimail. Becaue I don't think windows
7 live mail, works like OE, or does it? My understanding it is web based and
OE is not longer used?
I seem to recall many many years ago, you could save a file, pretty sure it
was .wab?

Can I go into the old HD, save the particular files (.wab)? put it on a
disk, and import email and addresses from those files? Whether into Eudora,
or Incredicmail?
Looking for the easiest and best way to do this?
thanks Bruce

Windows 7 is an operating system. Windows Live Mail is an e-mail client.
Will the new machine be Windows 7? Will you be using Windows Live Mail for
an e-mail client? Eudora? Neither is Web based. WLMail is a little
different than OE, but basically works the same, i.e. settings, rules,
etc.

Here is how to move messages and addresses from OE to WLMail.

For messages:

Copy the *ENTIRE* OE message store folder to flash or CD. (Folders.dbx
must be included). Place this on the Desktop or other location on the
machine using WLMail. Open WLMail and: File | Import | Messages |
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and point to where you saved it.

For Addresses:

Open the Address Book in OE and File | Export | Address Book (wab) and
save it to the Desktop. Copy to flash or CD. Place this on the Desktop or
other location on the machine using WLMail.

Open the Contacts list in WLMail, (Go | Contacts on the Menu Bar), and
File | Import | Windows Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved
it.

Bruce,
If a CD is used the files will be Read Only. The Read Only attribute has to
be unchecked after the files are moved from the CD to the computer.

Yes I understand that win7 is the OE. I have not used windows live mail so I
was not sure if it worked web based client or similar to OE.

The problem is, the Motherboard crashed so I have to hook the HD up to
another computer and download the files individually.

Is the OE "store" folder under OE folder in windows xp, and I understand on
copying the folder with the .dbx files.

I don't believe I can open OE if it is secondary and export the addresses.
I'll have to wait till I get the hd in another computer.
Is it possible to copy the folder they are ink similar to the .dbx files?

Thanks Bruce

WLMail will work just like OE.

When you get the XP HD running, the OE store folder will be found in this
path, or very similar.

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{Long string of letters & numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

Copy the entire Outlook Express folder without opening it. You do not have
to open the OE program at all.

Can't you open the address book without OE even being involved? WAB.EXE
is the executable and the data is in the *wab file.
