I scanned the other threads, but didn't find my exact problem: I have two
email accounts attached to my OE. To open OE, I have to "click on it--wait
for it not to respond -- click the "x" -- confirm that I'm cancelling -- send
error report to MS or not" up to 15 times before I will hear activity in my
tower and see the program launched. Have of those times, I'm just showing
that I'm "working online." The other half of the time, I'm showing that I'm
"working online" and "connecting" (but it doesn't connect) until, somehow, I
do it enough to get the program to launch. It's making me crazy!
You mention the "Connecting" status. That suggests that OE is trying
to connect to the mail server, and its stalling. For a start, at Tools,
Options, General, uncheck the option to do a send/receive at startup.
Then see if you have better luck with OE opening. If OE more
consistently opens, but then hangs when you try to do a Send/Receive,
that would help narrow down the issue.
Also make sure that McAfee is not configured to scan e-mail. As long as
your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are opened,
scanning e-mail as it downloads or sends is unnecessary and prone to
problems.
With some anti-virus (and anti-spam) programs, simply disabling the
e-mail scanning function doesn't really disable it. It simply tells the
program not to flag any messages. It still processes all the messages
and may still cause send/receive failures. What you may need to do is
uninstall the anti-virus program, then reinstall it using a custom
install option and unselect the e-mail scanning component for
installation.
