I have received an email saying that microsoft is going to stop the support
of using outlook express to download their hotmail mails.

I am using win2k. I think windows Live mail does not support win2k...

Windows Live Mail is not supported in Win2K.

This change does not affect Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscribers
($20US/year) *who access their Hotmail account in OE via POP3*.

Can you enlighten us a bit more on this Robear?

I had not paid any attention to mentions of WLM, but got presumably the same
message in my Hotmail ac today; beginning:
"Thank you for using Microsoft® Outlook® Express. Our information indicates
that you use Outlook Express to access a Windows Live™ Hotmail® e-mail
account via a protocol called DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning
protocol). DAV, like POP3 or IMAP, is the way that a mail client
communicates with a web-based mail server."

I don't want to mess about with another mail client if I don't have to, as
OE seems quite adequate for my purposes and I know that there is an expert
team, in this group, on hand for any problems that do arise. I have XP Pro
and Home (PC/Laptop).

When I set up the accounts years ago, there was just the option of 'HTTP' in
the settings for hotmail, so I have never heard of DAV until now. Can I
change this to access by POP3 instead? If so, how?

It is handy to have hotmail as a 'back up' if there is any problem with my
normal service provider, but I really don't want to have to have two mail
clients open when I have been quite content with both types of account in
the same client.

Should we, in this forum, be saying goodbye to OE (And Hotmail?) and moving
all our mail dbx data into WLM or what?

A view of 'what the experts are doing' would be much appreciated.

Thanks as always,

S

If you're running WinXP or Win2K and want to continue to be able to access
your Hotmail account in OE after 30 June 2008, you'll have to subscribe to
Windows Live Hotmail Plus *and* configure OE to access the account via POP3
(cf.
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!171.entry).

If you don't do so and OE attempts to synchronize with the (non-existant)
WebDAV (aka HTML) server after the 30th, all of your Hotmail messages and
folders will be deleted from OE.

This policy change does *not* affect your ability to access any/all messages
via the webmail page nor does it affect those already running Windows Live
Mail as their default Mail Client (which is not supported in Win2K or
earlier).

Please contact Hotmail Support if you have any further questions:
