Problem with inbox.dbx file

Hello,

I have the problem with inbox.dbx file. When I try to start Outlook Express, it hangs up, when I try to copy inbox.dbx file to another folder, I get the error message: Cannot copy [filename]: Data error (cyclic redunancy check).

Easy Outlook Express Repair and OE-Mail Recovery allow to access only messages. Is there any possibility to repair whole inbox.dbx file?

The size of the inbox.dbx file is 1124 Mb. Easy Outlook Express Repair and OE-Mail Recovery recover messages to the given folder, but in *.eml format.

Is there any possibility to recover messages to the *.dbx file?

Rename the Inbox.dbx to Inboxold.dbx and drag it to the Desktop. Open OE and a new empty Inbox should be waiting for you.

Create some new folders in OE for archiving. Run your repair tool on the Inboxold.dbx and drag the eml files to the new folders you created.

To help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

The error message that you are getting (cyclic redundancy check)
suggests that there is low level corruption on the hard disk. It means
that what the PC read back from the disk does not match what was written
to it.

It might be an isolated bad spot on the disk, or the drive may be
failing. I hope you have some good backups.

The best you can hope for is to recover some of the messages. I would
suggest this program as your best bet

The file is likely cross-linked and he would first need to run a scandisk to
fix that. If Windows can't access the file, then other programs can't
either.
