I get the message pop up To free up disk space Outlook Express can compact
messages. This will take a few minutes. My problem is that this message pops
up about every 2 minutes, 24 hours a day, even when my Outlook Express is
closed.
I've clicked ok and let it do it's thing over and over. I hardly have
anything at all in my folders. This is driving me crazy. Is there any fix for
this?

Create a new Identity.
Do you still get the compaction prompt?

Have you installed Windows Desktop Search?

Apparently, if its set to index OE, it invisibly opens and closes OE
every few minutes in order to the index the OE message store. After 100
open/closes OE will start prompting you about compacting.

Michael,

Have you confirmed that claim? FWIW it's not happening to me.
WS 4.0 on XPsp2 + IE8

OTOH I never wait for a prompt before occasional compacting (Alt-F,F,F)
and I also only check E-mail (POP3) manually a few times a day (Ctrl-M
or Ctrl-Shift-M).

Oops. Oh yeah. I frequently have to stop the wsearch service and set it
to disabled because it causes thrashing on my memory-constrained system,
especially when WLMail is active, which is when wsearch keeps getting
started automatically if it's not disabled. Nevertheless, I think that I have kept
the wsearch service running enough from time to time that I would say that
the implied generality of the claim is disproven. ; }

Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP SP2)?

Is Windows Live Mail installed, too? Was it ever installed?

Is Windows Desktop Search or Google Desktop installed?

That's what I'd like to determine.

Several people have reported problems with OE compacting prompt when
they no longer use OE. One person saw the compact count increase in the
registry every 5 minutes with OE closed. The problem stopped when he
uninstalled Windows Desktop Search.

There likely are some other factors, or else everyone who has install
WDS on XP would see the issue. Perhaps some settings in WDS.

Of course if the problem occurs for people who have never installed WDS,
that would also be useful to know which is why I asked the posted if he
had installed it.

How about:
1. WLMail is running concurrently *and* doing frequent automatic checking?
(Otherwise what is making WDS so active? AFAIK using OE alone does
not make it start. However, I will try testing that explicitly. I can't do a
"frequent checking" test on WLMail because I don't have an E-mail account
configured. I tried doing it with a Live Hotmail account but didn't get anywhere
with it.)

So far I have only seen one poster making that claim explicitly.
More signficantly I don't think that anybody else who has been reporting this
external symptom has actually inspected the registry value to know if it is being
reset to 100 after being decremented to 0. E.g. how sure are we that they are
really doing the full compaction (Alt-F,F,F) and how sure are we that they don't
have some interfering "security" package which prevents that reset anyway? Etc.

I don't have Windows Desktop Search installed and don't intend to. I
have enough stuff installed on my PC. I don't need anymore slowing it
down.

I switched to Windows Live Mail as my primary mail/news program about a
month ago. Nothing I do in WLM has any effect on the OE compact count.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{guid}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0
"Compact Check Count"

To clarify on how the count works, it starts at 0 after a full compact.
It is incremented each time OE is closed. If the count is over 100 at
closing, OE will prompt to compact. If you click cancel, the compacting
is skipped, but the count is still incremented.

That people are seeing the prompt every few minutes would suggest to me
that something is closing OE every few minutes.

It could well be that some security program is preventing the count from
being reset. Or it might even be that the count has some bogus value,
perhaps negative. But still, unless OE is in the process of closing the
value isn't checked and the prompt won't occur.

Michael,

I just installed SP3 for XP this morning. After installing the SP I have
been trying all day to get OE to stop with the pop-up messages. I had read a
post from someone else that mentioned to reset the Compact Check Count if
your system crashed during compaction. Oddly enough this silenced the issue
for about 10 to 20 minutes, but as you stated something is opening OE.

I haven't used OE in over a year so it is definitely annoying to have this
continue.

I do not have Windows Desktop Search or Google Desktop search installed so I
am confused as to what item is trying to continually open OE. I was watching
process monitor and could not find anything other than an extra svchost after
the service pack. This is becoming a real nuisance though.

Unfortunately you can't uninstall OE :(

Any help would be appreciated...

Actually now that I started thinking about it. If you are not using the
classic logon, how do you configure if Windows checks to update your email
inbox next to your login name. Obviously if I lock the screen or wanted to
switch user that item under the login does get updated stating how many
unread messages I have in an inbox.

I just never really cared to know how it got updated, but that built in
process is probably my suspicion at this point and perhaps the service pack
jumbled that code up.

Any thoughts??

Please start a new thread about this in WinXP General newsgroup, Josh.

Sir,

I will post this as well in the WinXP general as it may not be an OE issue.
However, just an update for anyone that is tired of the unread messaging with
the XP user login screen you can create/modify the following reg key and it
will no longer pop up.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

Then the DWORD value of 0 for MessageExpiryDays

Sadly to say this doesn't appear to be the culprit I am still getting the
compact messages with the same frequency. :(

Since we are seeing a rash of these reports now, it seems likely that
SP3 is the trigger for the problem. But since SP3 is mostly a roll-up
of previously released updates, I wonder what's new in it.

It's also curious that most of the reports are form people who have
never used OE or have stopped using it.

Since you say that you aren't using OE any more, are you willing to try
an experiment?

Go to the folder"
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express"

If you see the program MSIMN.EXE there, try renaming it to MSIMN.XXX and
see what happens.

That's the program that normally opens OE. It would be interesting to
see if renaming that will stop the pop-ups or give an error message of
something trying to run it.

If that has no effect, you can also try renaming MSOE.DLL to MSOE.XXX.
That Dell has most of the program logic for OE and is the one that makes
reference to the "Compact Check Count".
