Outlook 2000 fails to open and recommends running the
inbox repair tool. When running the tool it fails and
gives the following error message:

An error has occurred which caused the scan to stop. No
changes have been made to the scanned file.

The .pst file is 1.96 GB. The mail is downaloaded from our
ISP, so it resides only on the .pst. We need to resolve
this problem ASAP. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks in advance,

Emjay

Your .PST file is dangerously close to the 2GB limit. If scanpst.exe isn't
working, you may need to use the crop tool. Look here for the information
you need to hopefully recover at least some of your data:

Thanks for the advice. I tried editing the .pst with a hex
editor as indicated here:

http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm

I then ran scanpst.exe again and successfully repaired the
file. I did not have to use the crop tool. The user is now
cleaning up the email to reduce the amount. I'll then
setup an archive schedule to keep it at a manageable size.
The slipstick site is great - excellent advice and
infromation. I even pulled out my old sliderule and used
it!

Thanks again,

Emjay

Dear Emjay, the problem you have is a common issue for such outlook version users. Your PST file size is almost about 2 GB (i.e. 1.96 GB) which causes the failure of your scanpst.exe tool and causes scanpst error. As you has described that you depend upon your pst file, which means that you must recover the pst file data. Here a pst repair tool is suggested which can easily repair the large corrupted pst files. The best part of the tool is that you can easily split your large outlook 2000 pst file with the tool available,

Scanpst utility gives no assurance of data safety & cannot repair very big pst files. Third party tools recover corrupt pst file more than 2 GB. Please check this link for more information about outlook recovery software:- http://www.pcrecoverytools.com/outlook-pst-repair.html
