Using Outlook 2007 on Windows XP Pro computer. Something quite odd has
happened. Suddenly, all of the telephone numbers in my contact list are one
long number (xxxxxxxxxx) rather than the area code being in parentheses and
a dash inserted after the first three digits of the phone number
((xxx)xxx-xxxx). Even if I try to change the entry, it reverts back to one
long nunber. Any idea what's happening and/or how to correct it ?

Probably did it all by itself. Computers are notorious in that way.

Was it changed to a different location? I doubt it changed this by itself,
but since its something that you set once and forget about, it would be easy
to change it, then not notice anything amiss for weeks or months.

Finally had a chance to check the control panel. NOTHING looks different in
the dialing properties. Any other clues as to why/how my contact phone
numbers are changing?

No, but when the Check Phone Number box appears the area code is in the
right place, as is the phone number....then, when I close the box, the phone
number appears correctly except that it has a +1 in front of it !

Adding the 1 in front after viewing the phone # means the telephony service
is working correctly - you do want to avoid clicking that button though,
otherwise you'll need to remove the +1's.

What country/region is set in phone and modem options? Double click on the
location in the Phone and modem options dialog - the default location is
usually called My Location. What are you using for the Country/region?

To confirm - the phone number is not correctly formatted ( in (212) 555-1212
format) in an open contact as well in list views in the folder.

It looks like maybe an update to xp did it. I booted a virtual machine with
2007 and XP and the numbers are not formatting but if I type them in using
brackets etc, the format is not removed unless I press the button to check
the number.

Try changing the location to something else, applying then changing it back
to the US or retype the area code. That seemed to make it work for me.

Use a table view (like by categories) with in-cell editing enabled - then
you can edit the phone # without opening the contact.

Is there a "find and replace" option for the contact list? sure would make
the task easier than hving to go into each of the 700+ entries to add
parenthesees.

No, outlook doesn't support a global replace. Mapilab has an addin that can
do it - http://slipstick.com/redirect.asp?id=toolkit
to the best of my recollection, this is the only addin that can do it.
