Because we have used MDI format for storing online receipts and more for
several years, this is a real problem not to be able to see those documents!
First, why would Microsoft issue an update that removes a feature? These
documents that we have created over the years are very important to us and
suddenly we cannot access them.
Second, which update did it? Will uninstalling the update restore our PC?
Please help.
Regards,
Dale

But I did find the problem. It turns out that the updates did not uninstall
the viewer, they just broke the file association. I was able to restore the
file association with the Open With option.
Whew! What a scare. An unnecessary one because it should never have
happened, but at least it was just a scare. Maybe I am the only one left in
the world who uses MDI, huh?
Thanks for your help,
Dale
If you had said yes it was there, my next step would have been to tell you
to reset your file associations.

But I also am chasing MODI after updates. My MODI print driver has
disappeared 2-3 times, after updates usually, and now needs restoring
again, hopefully without having to Uninstall MODI and reinstall it again!

I have the exact same problem - no MDI view for the faxes that I
receive -
and cannot even access the "open with" anywhere on the fax console-
Please advise how to fix this -

Other than that here are some comments to your questions...
1) Reducing the attack surface
2) Already answered that it is due to Office 2003 Service Pack 3 plus
any/all hotfixes applied after
3) I wouldn't advise rolling back. If you decide to go this route, do this
temporarily and convert all your MDIs to PDFs. The reason why is that
Office 2007 deprecates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deprecation) the
feature and two, you really want to be current on service packs and hotfixes
for Office.
There are enough free PDF solutions out there plus the fact that Microsoft
likes their XPS file format (and include the ability to create PDFs in
Office 2007), that it only makes sense to move away from MDI and gain some
cross platform compatibility.
