Yes, you can probably get this restored without reformatting, but in
the future that Windows\Installer folder will become more important
due to the way that the MS Installer works and that it uses that folder
to store both basic and update information for installed programs.
A combination of that folder content and your CD is seen by the
installer as being, in effect, all part of the CD.
You may be able to reapply the SR1 update after using this utility
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/4/13.ASP
and then running a reinstall of Office2000 by double clicking the Office 2000
choice in Add/Remove programs from the Windows Control Panel .
If that doesn't work then Eraser Office 2000 with this utility,
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q219/4/23.ASP
restart the PC then install again. (Be sure, of course, to back up all of your
documents, etc first, as with any setup run).
Note, that programs other than Office may have placed content in
the \Windows Installer folder and you may have issues with other
items as well.
