Office Home and Student 2007 load problem

I have installed a newly purchased copy of Home and Student 2007 on my Dell
laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. It ran fine. Then today Windows Update
installed the SP2 for Office. Now I get a message that says "Please wait
while Microsoft configures Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007" when I try
to load Word or Excel. The program does eventually load. I discovered that if
I load the program from C:\program files\Microsoft office\microsoft12 that it
will load properly. The problem that I still have is that I cannot click on a
file name and have the program load without the configuration message from
above. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue?

It means that your installation got damaged somehow and the installer is
trying to fix it.
Do you let it finish or do you cancel the dialog?

If it continues to happen, uninstall Office and then reinstall it again. No
data or configuration settings will be lost in this process.

On my first installation of Office, everything apparently installed properly.
I did not interrupt the installation. I then downloaded the Service Pack 2
update and that is when the problem started. I could no longer double click
on a file name in Windows Explorer or on a desktop shortcut to a folder and
have it open properly without delay while it "configures" Office again.

I have followed your advice and uninstalled Office and reinstalled it. I
then downloaded the Service Pack again - almost 300 mb! and I still have the
problem. I don't know what the cause of the problem is but it sure is a
nuisance. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Although the below tool is for Office 2003 and not for Office 2007 there was
instances when it worked for Office 2007 for some with same issue as yours.

Try it and see if it will work for your Office 2007 issue. It might or might not.

I tried this but it only made things worse. Whenever I tried to open an
Office application I got a message that I did not have enough available
memory and to close some other windows. I didn't have anything else open and
I even rebooted but got the same result. Then I tried to uninstall Office
again and got a message about it being corrupted and to try reinstalling. I
did the reinstall of Office and it all worked fine but the service packs were
not installed. So I reinstalled SP1 (not 2) and ended up with the same
original problem (that I had with SP2) that I cannot open a file from
Explorer or a desktop shortcut without Office wanting to configure itself
each time. How frustrating!!

Here is the current chapter in my continuing struggle. I have tried the
repair function in the Office H&S 2007 install with no success, so I
uninstalled Office and reinstalled it. I then hid the Office updates called
Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2. Then I installed all of the other Office
updates. Success! Office works both when loading the program from the
executable and when I click on a file name. There is apparently something in
the roll-up of the service packs that my computer or Office does not like. I
feel that I am fairly protected with the other Office updates so I guess I
will not worry any longer. It is working like it should so I will be
satisfied with that. :)
