I have windows xp and office 2003. I received .docx file, that just won't
open for me. I ran file converter for 2007 several times, but it seems to be
doing nothing. When I try to save it as a doc file, or any other file, all it
does is to open pages with a lot of different scripts that I don't know how
to convert.

Please help!!

I have the same problem. I am trying to use MS Word 2000 to open .docx
files. I have downloaded the Compatibility Pack twice and installed. Still
does not work.
Help !!

In Word in Tools=>Options=>General turn on the
[x] Confirm Conversions at Open
choice. Then use File open to select the .docx file and try to open it.
Does Word popup a dialog noting the file as a Word 2007 document?

Bob

I followed your instructions regarding putting an "x" in Confirm
Converstions at Open and yes I do get a popup that the file is a Word 2007
Document. When I attempt to go ahead and open the .docx file I continue to
receive the error message that states "There was an error opening the file."
Thanks

If it's being recognized that the file is Word 2007 document it's often that the file header or some content is damaged, although
there could be some left over temp files in the way.

From Start=>Run and Word and Outlook not running, recycle all of the files that you find using a search string of
~$*.*;*.tmp

From within Word 2000 if you create a new document put some text, etc in it then use
File=>Save As
and choose to save it as Word 2007 document.
Close Word, reopen it and try to open that .docx file you just created.

I too am having this problem. I followed the exact instructions on the
Microsoft website - installing office/windows updates before downloading the
conversion pack. However, every time I try to open a docx file, its giving
me the error message "There was an error opening the file." I have tried
repairing my office 2003 software, redownloading all updates, and
redownloading the coversion pack. Still no luck. Very frustrated!!!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

This made no difference for me. I deleted all these files and I still cannot
open ANY docx file created by anyone else. I can create and open my own
files, but anyone else's files always display "there was an error opening the
file" - and no, this is not a permission problem as the permissions are fine.

I had similar problems. Tried adding the confirm conversion: Open the doc -
the "Convert file" dialog appears. At this point, instead of accepting the
default value "Encoded Text" Scroll down and select "Word 2007 Macro-enabled
Document", et voila... document converted :-)

Hope this works for you guys.

Cheers.

This has been answered so many times, I'm dizzy.

Down load the office 2003 conversion program from the MS site
