I suddenly developed a problem that using "save as" in any Office product,
Word, Excel or Outlook, hangs my PC up for long periods. Each step in the
commands to "save as" take a full 30 secs to a minute each. I am not on a
network, this is my laptop. It started today when I clicked on an attachment
in an Outlook email and selected "save as." My screen ended up all white and
hung up for about 5 mins before I cold booted. I did a system restore and
that didn't help. Help!

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

I've had the same problem and disconnecting the network drives worked, but
these were live drives. Do you know why this would happen and what can I do
to make sure that remapping the drives doesn't adversely affect MS Office in
the future? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

We had similar problems in our organization and found a Registry Key that
fixed it.
You can try the same thing - can't hurt - Windows 2000 and XP
Save the following text using Notepad with the name fix.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SCAPI]
"Flags"=dword:00100c02

Double-click the file to update the Registry then test to see if it worked.

Hi, I seem to have the same problem when using the "save as" function, but it
doesn't seem to have anything to do with mapped network drives, as there are
no drives to disconnect. I already tried to update the registry with AI's
fix, but didn't help.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 "Problems in Windows
Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update
MS06-015".

If you aren't comfortable with editing the Windows registry
yourself, then go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software -
Fix". Download and run the script to automatically modify your
registry as described in KB918165. You may need to temporarily
disable your antivirus program in order to run the script.

It is anticipated that Microsoft will release a revised version
of the MS06-015 update on Tuesday, April 25.
